World SuperBike 2001 - Round 6 - Donington - Quotes

Hodgson - “It was a really tough race, I was relieved when Troy passed me because I was tense before that and I was able to relax and get back into my rhythm. I had a small problem with my clutch, which affected my down shifting, so I wasn’t as smooth in the second race as I was in the first. Apart from that it was good race. I really enjoyed battling it out with Frankie and Troy. When I made the mistake at Melbourne Loop I was waiting for Frankie to do the same, so I could get ahead of him, but it wasn’t to be. I’m delighted to have a race win under my belt, especially in front of my home crowd and team sponsors. I’m really looking forward to the next round in Germany. I’ve had a good look at the circuit map and will be testing there next Wednesday. I can’t wait to do it again!”

Chili - "It was a fantastic race - very hard, but very enjoyable. Five laps from the end I saw that Neil (Hodgson) was having a little problem at Melbourne, so I knew that this was where I could make my move. But, I waited until the last lap, made my move and then held on through the last corner to cross the finish line first. It was beautiful to see the chequered flag and know it was for me. We have all worked so hard this season and the team deserves this victory. Our results today were very important to all of us. We knew that there was a lot of work to do at the start of the season and I'm so pleased that we have some reward for all the effort everybody has put in."

Hislop - Race 1 - "I tipped into the Old Hairpin and the adverse camber threw the back wheel round and the next I knew I was crossed up doing 120mph on the grass. I was happy to be able to get back into the race but I was a little bit disappointed I let Chili past to claim second place. Still, third is a good result" Race 2 - "The rear tyre wasn't hooking up properly and then the bike suddenly slowed so I thought it best to park it up rather than risk doing any damage."

Corser - "Getting a podium again was a good feeling and pretty important for us today because we've narrowed the gap on Bayliss and also moved into second place ahead of Edwards. That was pretty crucial for us. The track was damp for the start of the race one and there were plenty of clouds around, so tyre choice was a bit of lottery. In the early part of the race it was OK, but as the track became drier and slicks front and rear would've been the go. I just kept it going, without taking too many risks, and tried to finish and get as many points as I could. The second race was much better and I was involved in a great fight with Chili and Hodgson. Any of us could've won, but I lost a bit of ground on them right towards the end of the race and just couldn't make it up again. With Bayliss having an off day, the difference between us is down to seventeen points and I intend to reduce that even further in the next round."

Edwards - "I was comfortable on the opening laps but I soon realised it was going to be impossible to keep up that pace. The rear was moving around and was just doing my best to try and stay upright. For one reason or another it's just not been my day. I could have made a better tyre choice for the first race then I lost rear wheel traction in the second race. But I'm 11 points closer to the lead of the series tonight so all is not lost."

Bostrom - “Today’s results feel really good, the bike was perfect, the tyres were perfect, but unfortunately the rider was not. If I had been 100%, I know I could have won out there today.”

Okada - "I had the same problems as Colin with rear traction but we always feared that here. I'm disappointed to have not done better but on the day it was difficult. In race two I could see Troy Bayliss was having similar problems and I managed to get past him about halfway through the race. I'm looking forward to the next round. It's a new circuit for all of us so we'll all be starting off equal. Up to now this year I've been to some new circuits and at times it's been difficult to get on the pace with the faster riders - hopefully I can win in Germany."

Chambon - "Conditions were difficult before the start of the first race because it was impossible to know if the track would dry out or if more rain would come. That made the tyre choice a bit of a lottery. I took it fairly steadily in the opening laps and then gradually moved up throughout the race and I was happy to finish ninth. The second race was much harder and there weren't many opportunities to move high up the order. Overall I am quite happy with the work we have done over the weekend and I’m happy to have got some more championship points in the bag. I am very happy for Frankie, I’m just sorry I couldn’t join him on the podium."

Bayliss - “I got two good starts but really struggled out there today, after five laps things started going downhill. The problem was we had difficulty getting the right set-up all weekend. At least we came out with our points lead intact but I’m really disappointed with the results today”.

Xaus - “Things are getting better and better all the time, in the first race I settled for seventh after losing concentration due to Hislop going off the circuit while in race 2 I got a bad start and Chili passed me. By the time I was moving well again I had lost the leading group. Today my shoulder wasn’t feeling too good either but we’re getting there”.

Yanagawa - Race 1 - “We made the complete wrong tyre choice, because we should have gone for a rear slick like the other riders. It was a lonely race as I couldn’t push hard - all I tried to do was to score as many points as I could.” Race 2 - “I wasn’t able to fight like I would have liked. This weekend we have struggled from the start and haven’t made the progress we would have liked. We couldn’t find the right gearbox for this track and it was really easy to spin the rear wheel exiting the slow speed corners."

Lavilla - Race 1 - “I couldn’t do any better than tenth today and that’s really hard. I hate not being able to fight throughout the race.” Race 2 - “I made a few mistakes in the second race. I had to run up the escape road on lap three just before the last chicane. I was able to rejoin the race and slowly catch the leaders but I just couldn’t bridge the gap. It was a really boring race for me and I tried 100% - as usual - but it’s always hard to finish up the front from a low qualifying position.”

Toseland - “I’m happy with result from race one, but I’m disappointed that I didn’t get the chance to do better in the second, I ran off the track at the first corner on the first lap of race two. I rejoined and started to make my way through the pack, but the bike gave up. It was just one of those things. The fans were great. They were really getting behind Neil and me. It was a fantastic experience!”
