World SuperBike 2001 - Round 7 - Lausitzring - Quotes
|
Troy Bayliss - Race 1 - “I got a good start but it seemed that everyone was going berserk out there and I got boxed in at the first
curve! I then had to struggle throughout the race but it was a real pleasure to get on the podium. I pushed hard but couldn’t do anything about
Colin”. Race 2 - “It’s been a good weekend and we came away with a lot of
points, it certainly wasn’t easy out there in the wet because I ran a really soft tyre at the back and had a lot of spin in the final few laps. I got a good start and felt comfortable until half-way through but then came under a lot of pressure from Neil at the
end”.
Troy Corser - "That was a bit of a disappointing day for us. Before the races began I expected to be on the podium two times, but in the end it was a bit of a struggle to finish where I did. I definitely was hoping for a better result in the first (dry) race, but I had a tyre problem and I just couldn't push any harder. If I had, I would've crashed, so I settled for as many points as possible. The second race worse - in terms of the result. It rained in between the two races and the track was pretty wet. We all knew how slippery and difficult the conditions are at Lausitzring when it is wet, so we took it pretty steady at first. Just like the first race, once I had lost touch with the leaders it was impossible to catch them again. My tyre problem stopped me from getting back at them and I had to settle for whatever I could get - seventh. The low finishes are one thing, but seeing the points deficit between Bayliss and me increase isn't good. But, I've got to just forget about today and concentrate on getting back on the podium at Misano in the next round." Neil Hodgson - “I wanted to come to Germany to prove the point that I can win races on circuits outside the UK, I thought everything was on track since I took pole position and the lead in race one. Unfortunately, I made the wrong tyre choice and I had to drop back and that was really frustrating. But everything came together in race two. I would put that down to be my best performance of the year, I timed my run on Bayliss slightly wrong and I wasn’t close enough to make a pass on him. I’m looking forward to doing it all again at Misano.” Colin Edwards - "I always knew I could control the race if I could get to the front on the first lap, I knew from practice that I had a good race pace in the dry conditions and the Michelins were good for the race distance. My only problem was the front tyre in the early laps. When I had a full tank of fuel I was having to feed the machine into the corners but once the fuel load went down the tyre worked perfectly. My second race was over when I made a complete mess of the start. I could have won that race but I paid the price for not getting it right off the line. I tried as hard as I could but losing so many places on the first lap gave Troy (Bayliss) and Neil (Hodgson) the chance to get away. I've got a win today which I have to be happy about but this championship looks set to go all the way to the last round." Tady Okada - "I was confident of being able to win in the wet but the surface here is a lot different to Phillip Island and I was really struggling for grip at the front wheel. I didn't have the confidence I needed to go faster. In those conditions it becomes very tricky to know what is a good pace and you can only judge it by what's going on around you. I'm pleased with third place in the first race and to get into the top 10 of the championship at the end of today." Pierfrancesco Chili - "Well it wasn't so bad and it wasn't so good. Race one was not so bad and I know I would've had a better result if I had been able to push my rear tyre harder. Because I could not do that I just tried to keep my position and attack when I could. I was more disappointed with race two The conditions were bad I know and it would've been so easy to crash. So I decided to ride steadily and get as high up as possible. In the end I'm quite happy with my two finishes today." Ruben Xaus - “I knew Colin was behind me and when the track dried out a little he had a harder tyre and I couldn’t do anything about him. This is the third time that I have almost made it onto the podium, but I know I’ll get there sooner or later. Things went really well in race 2, I just feel bad about the first race because I know I could have done better”. Ben Bostrom - “The only thing I managed to learn here in Germany was how to ride in the wet. I haven’t really had much experience of wet-weather racing and this will be important for the future because my lap times improved considerably towards the end.” Broc Parkes - "I was confident of running with those guys all the way in the wet second race. Unfortunately when I had worked my way up to 4th the gear lever came adrift which sent me backwards through the pack real quick" |
