World SuperBike 2001 - Round 8 - Misano - Quotes
|
Bayliss - “Ben rode a hard race but as
he was up front all the time, I had a chance to concentrate on where to
attack. I had to put everything just into staying with him all the time
and then after making a few attempts to pass him I eventually got
it at the end. Basically I just don’t like to lose”.
Race 2 - “I got a
terrible start and it took me ages to get past Lavilla and Antonello and
I was then gifted the second place when Hodgson retired. But the weekend
proved to be much better than I had expected after last week’s tests and
I managed to increase my points lead in the championship”. Bostrom - “Both Troy and I had some fast points and some slow points on the circuit but that’s what racing is all about. It was tough out there because I know where I’m slow and that’s the easiest place to pass. There were a few lead changes and then on the last lap I tried so hard to pass Troy again but he ran a great race." Race 2 - "My mind and body were worn out after the battle with Troy but this race was a lot smoother, because we made a small change to the bike. Thanks to all the guys, they did a great job and thanks to all the Italian fans who gave me energy all the way round the track”. Lavilla - Race 1 - “I didn’t even
see the yellow flag and the first I knew that I passed under the yellow
was after the podium! I am the first person to back off when I see a
yellow, but all I saw was a crashed bike. I
thought it had just happened and I had already passed Colin. If I had
have known about the yellow flag, I would have backed off and overtaken
Colin on the next lap. Supposedly we had four laps to go and I felt it
was easy to pass Colin on any corner. It’s disappointing but there is
always another race to make it right.” Race 2 - “It should have
been two third places, but I’m happy to keep this one. It was really
hard to race in such hot conditions. I got a better start than the first
race, built up a good rhythm and didn’t want to take too many risks.
Colin crashed right in front of me and I almost went with him, but I was
able to control myself and keep up the pace. I was happy with fourth and
then when Hodgson slowed I thought it was a bit of a bonus and gladly
took the podium I should have had in race one.” Hodgson - "We’ve all worked really hard all weekend and everyone has gone out of their way to do the best job possible, in 11 years of racing I’ve never had a problem of this nature before. It’s a freak situation. No one is to blame. It’s all apart of racing." Corser - "I'm frustrated and very disappointed. Last year I won both races and this year I was lucky to finish both! There's very little to say after a day like today. I had tyre problems in both races - bad in race one and worse in race two. The rear was spinning and then vibrating and I thought about pulling in, but decided to keep going just to get some points. We're going to have a meeting to try and find out what's going on and then try and get it sorted out, because at the moment we're going nowhere. That's it. I hope I'll have more to say after the next round at Laguna Seca in two weeks." Antonello - "The settings on the bike were perfect and I was aiming for an even better position after coming eighth in Race 1. I kept up a good pace in the second and think I can still do better. I'm very happy - this is an important result for my career as a rider and I'm looking forward to my next objective: a place on the World Championship podium." Laconi - "I was out of Race 1 with a gearbox problem, and was pinning my hopes on the second, however, I wasn't able to get a new tyre for the second start identical to the one I'd chosen for the first. So I was forced to use the tyres I'd already done five laps on. We just didn't have enough material available. Using those tyres, I lost some tread due to overheating." Chili - “It was not so much fun today. The heat made it very difficult but I’m glad we were able to take some good points from this round. We’ve already proved that the 2001 Suzuki GSX-R750 is a race winner, now we have to work hard to consistently get podium finishes. I’m sure we will do better at Laguna Seca." Xaus - “Things turned out pretty good in race 2 and I was pretty pleased with my performance, especially after all the trouble I have had all weekend. If I had started off well on Friday I am sure that the whole weekend would have been different but I managed to score some more points and moved up a couple of places in the championship”. Toseland - "I’ve had an absolutely outstanding weekend, to beat Corser and Chili was amazing. I just hope I can do it all again. I need to make better starts, in order to be consistent and finish inside the top ten." Chambon - “After today's races I feel very, very sore. It was very difficult just getting on the bike this morning due to the infection at the top of my thigh. I tried my best in the races, but it was hard to blot out all the pain for every lap. The heat didn't help either - or the bumpiness of the track. I managed to get some points, but it was hard work.” Goddard - “The first race was going well until the bike stopped. We made up more than 10 places from where we started and I was all over the back of (Stephane) Chambon. At the time we were only one place out of the points so things were looking quite promising. After the re-start in the second race we were again improving our position when I crashed. I lost the front-end in the left-right chicane. The front just disappeared on me. It was a frustrating day, but you've got to expect problems when you're starting out with a new bike. I know that from the Aprilia's first season. Overall we've all learnt some important things this weekend by going racing. We now know we're about 2-seconds a lap off the pace, so we've got a target to aim for. The bike is good under brakes, it turns in like it should, and the suspension works well. The things we need most right now are engine improvements, such as more power and acceleration, plus better reliability. We will be running the same 'spec' engines at Laguna, but we should have something new after that. There's also a new clutch coming soon. There is a lot of work to do, but everyone is enthusiastic to keep improving." |
