World SuperBike 2001 - Round 9 - Laguna Seca - Quotes

Ben Bostrom - "I got a bad start because I was sleeping again and I had to work really hard to get back to the front, I couldn’t get by my brother at the start, I didn’t realize how hard he was to pass because he brakes really deep but it worked out all right. Then I passed all the other guys at the Corkscrew, that’s my favourite spot. I got bad drive up the hill while I was going for Neil but he gave me three feet and I got by. I wanted to get a better start this time and I did. The guys behind then had a big dogfight and in the end I saw Troy coming back at me but things were OK. Thanks to the team who did a great job and a big thanks to the crowd who I’d say were worth nearly a second a lap. It’s been the best Fourth of July weekend of my life!"

Corser - "After my recent results there was a lot of pressure on me to do well here. I was told to go out and win and, if it hadn't been for a couple of average starts and Ben (Bostrom), I think I could've won both races today. In the first race I was comfortable in second place behind Neil (Hodgson) and looking for a way past, but he brakes very late and so it was hard to pass. Then, Ben came along - on a mission - and once he got in front there was no stopping him. In the second race, I made a good start, but then got held up by Colin (Edwards) and Neil and by the time I got past them, Ben had a good lead. I managed to chase him down, but he speeded up again and that was that, so I settled for second place. The Aprilia worked really well here this weekend and the Dunlops did their job really well also. We didn't make any changes between the races - we used the same bike with the same tyres for both races - and I'm happy to get two podiums. All the team worked well this weekend and I want to thank them and all the fans who cheered me on here. We'll be back next year."

Hodgson - Race 1 - "I enjoy racing at Laguna, it’s a brilliant circuit which has an element of danger that a lot of riders don’t like. I do. My plan for the first race was to follow Bostrom and pass him on the last lap, but it didn’t happen like that. I got the lead. I had to rethink my strategy, which was to build on my lead, but I made a mistake. That’s the only thing that lost me the race win. The bike was perfect. The team has done a great job. I just have to go one better in the next race." - Race 2 - "I knew Bostrom was going to get a good start and I didn’t want to let him go, I ran wide on the first two corners and that was it. I then got caught up behind Edwards, but the early battle with him and Corser was the best part of the race for me. I lost my rhythm for a while and after that I was a little erratic, which is not how I usually ride. Overall, I’m delighted with my results from the weekend, particularly now that I’m up to fifth in the championship. I’m really looking forward to getting back to the UK and racing in front of my home crowd at Brands Hatch."

Eric Bostrom - "I think I’ve done a little too much racing (because of taking part in the AMA races as well) and it took the edge off my performance today. I only like racing for first place and I don’t like filling the top five - but fifth in this competition is nothing to complain about. I felt I was riding well enough to be on the podium, but that didn’t happen. I’ve got to take my hat off to my team - they were awesome. We started the weekend with a couple of problems and they whipped the bike into shape pretty quick. Four races later - with two wins in the national races and a pair of top fives in the international races isn’t bad."

Chandler - "Ninth is nothing to write home about in race one, but we had a decent race and I’m really happy. We got to race a couple of guys and that makes it all the more fun. In race two, I just mistimed the lights and jumped the start. After the ‘Stop and Go’ penalty it wasn’t worth continuing so I pulled in. It’s been a long weekend and I was really happy racing both the National series and the World Championships. I’d much rather be racing than watching from the stands."

Bayliss - "The weekend didn’t turn out too bad, I increased my lead over Colin but Troy gained some points on me, In the first race I had a bit of chatter in the opening laps while in race 2 I was in quite a battle against the two Hondas and had to ride much harder. Then with a few laps to go the tyre went off and I settled for fourth but I’m pretty happy with the results, which were good for my position in the championship."

Edwards - Race 1 - "I was doing OK and making a little bit of ground on Eric (Bostrom) and Bayliss then I braked as normal for the Corkscrew but, for some reason, the front end started vibrating really badly. I lost the tow but every left-hander after that the vibration was there. It was worse going through turn two every lap for some reason. I had hardly any grip from the first lap but I could just about hang on to Eric and I was trying as hard as I ever have." - Race 2 - "I went out there in that second race to give it everything and more - even if it meant crashing, I wasn't bothered. It was so frustrating for me. I did everything I could but I was sliding around and couldn't get any traction. This afternoon it was all about the rear spinning, especially through the left-hander after the Corkscrew. I don't know what good to say about today's races, this has been a bad round for me and I'm desperate to get back to winning ways at Brands Hatch. That place holds good memories for me after winning the title there last year."

Xaus - "It was good to be able to chase Colin for a top 6 finish in the first race after he made a mistake. I managed to get closer to him but then he put in a couple of fast laps and controlled me for the rest of the race. I had a slight vibration in race 2 and was unable to do any better than tenth. I think I rode quite well this weekend to get some more points. The problem is I started from row 4 and that’s really hard because you have to fight all the way. If I have a good qualifying and Superpole then I know I can be up there with the rest."

Toseland - Race 1 - "Laguna is such a physically demanding circuit, I’ve not raced here on a Superbike before, so it was a big learning curve for me. It’s a tricky circuit and the Corkscrew is a bit intimidating. I lacked a little stability into the corners, so the team will be changing a few things before the next race." - Race 2 - "I got a much better start and I was able to run at a consistent pace, the difference between the two races was in the amount grip I had and this had a positive effect on my confidence. I closed in on Edwards to challenge for fourth (behind Troy Bayliss and Eric Bostrom) but I couldn’t get past him in the little time I had left. I’m over the moon with my best finish of the season, which has set me up perfectly for the next round at Brands Hatch."

Okada - Race 1 - "I made a good start but then someone hit me as we went over the brow of the hill on the first lap. After that I was in 13th place and playing catch-up. Once I was able to get back into a rhythm I managed to pull back one or two places. I had a problem with front end feel on the machine which slowed me for nearly all of the race. The front felt like it was pushing and ready to tuck under. I lost good rear grip from about the 10th lap." - Race 2 - "I was in a similar position to Colin," said Okada. "I was searching for confidence in the front and spinning the rear tyre. I like to use the rear brake but for some reason I couldn't in the second race. Every time I touched the rear brake the rear wheel came around. Then when I ran wide at turn six and onto the gravel it was motocross tyres I needed not slicks!"

Chili Race - "I don't know if I've done enough laps to make any useful comments today. Yanagawa's bike took me out in the first race and I ended up with a sore groin, abdomen and ribs. In race two I only managed two laps before I experienced a clutch or gear problem and so I pulled in."

Stephane Chambon - "I'm not at all happy with today. I did seventeen laps in the first race and in race two, I made a good start, but a rider drifted in front of me and I had to take avoiding action. Because of that I lost some ground and then I had my work cut out trying to get back into some sort of contention."

Yanagawa - Race 1 - "The bike felt really good compared to the rest of the weekend and I got a great start, which raised my confidence. It was easy to keep up with the leading riders in the early laps, but coming into the 'Corkscrew' Colin Edwards out braked himself and pushed me wide. I had nowhere to go and as the bike ran off the track it hooked up on the edge of the track and threw me off. I’m really sorry for Chili as he couldn’t avoid my fallen bike, causing him to crash also." Race 2 - "My crew were great. The bike I crashed in race one was more damaged than I thought, so I had to use my spare bike. They did a great job to give me such a fast bike for race two. I didn’t get the start I wanted and just tried to be as consistent as possible in the opening laps. In the end, I just tried as hard as I could and lap-by-lap I was able to pass some riders. I wish there had been another three laps!"

Lavilla - Race 1 - "That was a really hard and physical race and I left myself a lot of work to do after a bad start. There was a group of four or five riders in front of me, but I had a two- second gap that I couldn’t make up throughout the race. In the end, I just had to race for some points and not make any silly mistakes. After qualifying I wasn’t very happy and I almost felt like going home. But I didn’t! We’ve learnt a lot about the suspension and tyres in the first race so now we’ll have to see if the changes will help." Race 2 - "I felt confident on the grid before the second race because I thought the changes we made to the bike would help me go faster. In the opening couple of laps the bike was running good and I was going quickly. I was pushing the bike really hard and on the fourth lap I just lost the front end going into the first corner. The crash topped off a really bad weekend for us."

Goddard - "It's good to get our first championship point, and finishing both races here shows the reliability of the Benelli has improved since Misano. Now we need more engine performance, and that will come with development. We struggled here with acceleration going up the hill in the higher gears, but overall we're making progress. In the first race I chose the wrong (rear) tyre. I went with a British-made Dunlop which we tested yesterday in the same conditions and it worked fine. However, today I had no grip and it was sliding around everywhere. For the second race I switched to a Japanese-made tyre, which is bigger and runs at a higher temperature. I had much better grip, and my race time was almost 7-seconds quicker. I was ahead of (Broc) Parkes and (Giovanni) Bussei, and then they both passed me. On the last lap Bussei crashed. We've got some engine updates and mapping coming for the next race at Brands (Hatch), and hopefully a new clutch so that should be good. There's a three-week break before Brands and I'm coming back to Australia for a few days. I'm really looking forward to seeing my baby daughter for the first time."
