World SuperSport 2001 - Round 11 - Imola - Quotes

Andrew Pitt 4th - 2001 World SuperSport Champion - "I would have liked to have got up there and mixed it with them, but once I knew Casoli was out I could see from my pit board that fourth was good enough for the championship. I settled for that. I probably could have gone harder over the last few laps, but the three guys in front of me were having a big battle and I didn't want to risk the championship by getting caught up in someone else's accident. It feels a little strange to be champion without winning a race, but you have to be consistent all season and I was the only one of the top guys to finish every race. We had more podium finishes than anyone else so that's what you can put it down to. My team did a great job all season and the Kawasaki was on the pace at just about every track. Winning the title hasn't really sunk in yet, but it probably will once we start celebrating." Fabien Foret - Race winner - "This is the perfect way to end the season. After winning in Germany earlier this month I really wanted a second win to prove myself. Both Pere (Riba) and myself have re-signed with Ten Kate Honda for next year, we're starting testing very soon and we'll be looking to win the title next year." Karl Muggeridge 2nd - "It was a great race and we’ve been very close to our first win on the GSX R 2001. I got a good start and the bike felt fast. After the first couple of corner I’ve passed Casoli and suddenly I felt something bumping on my rear and then saw the Belgarda bike flying across the gravel. I don’t know what happened behind me but I nearly went down there as well. So for the next 10 laps I was leading the race but knowing there is basically no gap behind me because Pitt was right on my rear. After more than half of the race distance Whitham and Foret got passed me on the same lap. They are both riding a bit of a different line than me and as I tried to keep up with them I’ve worn out my tyres and the last few laps I just kept sliding all over the place. But I still though I could get the lead back and tried hard. The last lap Jamie’s misfortune became my fortune and I got back into 2nd place. I’m very happy with this result and it’s great to finish the season on the podium." James Whitham - 3rd - "I
was very disappointed to see Paolo crash out on the first lap because
obviously our team plan was to help him win the World Championship. I
don't know what happened, and I don't want to comment. But after that I
rode my own race and tried to win for myself. With about three laps to
go I cocked it up a bit and put myself over my own screen and dropped
back to third, too late to get back with Foret and Muggeridge again." Chris Vermeulen 10th - "I'm really pleased to have got into the top 10. That practice crash on Friday really wrecked my chances of winning this weekend and it's been an uphill struggle since then. I didn't make the best of starts but then just concentrated on taking every opportunity to pass someone. There were a few tricky moves early in the race but it's so important not to lose too much ground in those first couple of laps. At least I've got a top 10 finish for the team too. We've had a year of mixed fortunes and it looked unlikely that we'd have anything to cheer about today but it's all worked out well." Christian Kellner - 17th - "I got struck from behind by Chris Vermeulen on the way into a corner on the first lap and that made me run across the gravel for a long time. I re-entered the race in 29th position so to fight back to 17th was not so bad I guess. But it is just typical of my luck this year. I have already crossed out this season from my mind and I am looking forward to next year." Paolo Casoli - DNF - "I am very upset and angry because I was squeezed out on the entrance to the second chicane by Muggeridge. He came right across me and I had to brake very hard to miss him. We got locked together for maybe 30 metres and then I fell. I cannot believe that I have lost the chance of the championship in this way." |
