World SuperSport 2001 - Round 2 - Quotes

Kevin Curtain 1st - "Fujiwara was attacking really hard and I thought I've got to stay with these guys and if I let them get ahead I'm gonna fall back in the clutches of everyone else. So I've put my head down and stayed with them and realised where I was slow and where I was a bit faster, so I was able to get back in the lead and I just pulled a bit of a gap and kept going. I still can't believe it, it's just so awesome to win here at home. We have a very good package which will help us to achieve the same in the future."

Michael Bartholemy, BKM team-manager - “We knew from beginning that Kevin is a fast rider, he had proved that last year but what satisfies me most is that finally the team got rewarded for all the work we have been doing in the past few years. It's the first season we have factory support from Honda and Michelin and we win already in the second round of the Championship. Also Ivan has done a very good job with his 9th place. His moved a step forward and was more comfortable in the rain then in the dry, which helped to get more confident with the bike. Kevin impressed us at Sugo last year; the team is better structured this year so I think we should be able to achieve another good result at there.”

Andrew Pitt 3rd - “They’ve worked so hard to make my bike as fast as we saw today. I pushed really hard from the start to get a bit of a gap on the rest of the field but was unable to draw clear. I rubbed fairings a couple of times with Kevin Curtain, but I’ve raced him a lot and know there wasn’t any danger - I just wish I could have kept in front.”

Paolo Casoli 7th - “I did not put any tape on the top of my visor, for fear of it steaming up, but instead I had water running down the inside of it, which made visibility very bad. I realised than that I had to concentrate hard just to finish, so I went as fast as I could without risking a crash and scored some good points. The conditions were terrible and there were many crashes.”

Jörg Teuchert 8th - “For the first five laps I could not see anything. I think there were six or seven riders on my row when we started, so as soon as the red light went out I started! I had a good drive down to the first corner and took many riders on the way in, until I got squeezed by a couple of other guys in turn two. From then on I could see nothing but the spray for about five laps. I had a big fight with some riders, but once I got clear I was setting good times, as fast as the leaders, at the end. The problem for us today was having started from a bad qualifying position. That meant it was always going to be hard. I look forward to Sugo now, because I won there last year.”

Christian Kellner 16th - “I could not see anything for the first few laps, but we really never got into a good rhythm with the machine or the track all weekend. I was really disappointed to finish and yet not even score a single point. It was not our track at this race.”

Iain MacPherson DNF - "“The championship isn’t over yet. I will just have to start winning some races and catch up the points. I’m really happy for Andrew and it’s good for the team - I just wish it had been me!”

Karl Muggeridge DNF - "Well that was pretty bad out there today probably the worst I've ever raced in. You just couldn't see where you were going and the wind made it even harder to keep your line on the track. I made a bad start and then settled down to see what I could do. It was going OK really, but there was so much water on the track and it was easy to crash in heaps of different places. And that's what happened to me after MG corner. The rear just let go and that was that down before I knew what was happening. I'm very disappointed not to have score any points, but I'm relieved to leave here in one piece".

Chris Vermeulen DNF - “My helmet visor broke away early in the race and although I was getting soaked I could just about see where I was going. Then, on the 12th lap, I couldn’t see where I was going as I went through the last corner of the lap and down I went. I’m very disappointed. It felt easy out there and I was very comfortable in fourth and confident of making a challenge in the closing stages of the race. I saw Kevin Curtain make his move on the eighth lap so I decided to pass Andrew Pitt and Katsuaki Fujiwara to get second place and give chase to Kev - I didn’t want him to get away at the front. Hopefully Sugo next Sunday will be better for me.”

James Whitham DNF - “I knew I had to get away somewhere with the leaders or else it would be all over, because of the track conditions and the spray. I was up with the leaders until Curtain went past me. We touched but it was nothing really. He managed to get a gap on me because I went wide and on the next corner I lost the front.”
