World SuperSport 2001 - Round 2 - Race Report
| Dean Thomas
was the fastest man during the very wet morning warm-up today at
Phillip Island and conditions are just as bad now so he stands a good
chance of a good points finish.
The fastest ten in the wet this morning were as follows - Thomas 1m56.139s, Le Grelle 1m56.156s, MacPherson 1m56.253s, Pitt 1m56.512s, Fergusson 1m56.679s, Guareschi 1m57.225s, Riba 1m57.291s, Curtain 1m57.473s, Vermeulen 1m58.391s, Teuchert 1m58.494s. So with 5 Aussies in the top ten quickest this weekend we stand the home crowd can hope for some strong results. Fujiwara got the jump with Kevin Curtain right behind him, followed by Pitt, Thomas, Riba, Vermeulen, Casoli, Whitham, Pirovano, Fergusson. Muggeridge got off to a terrible start and is languishing in 17th. 1 second covers the top 4 as they cross the line to commence lap 2 with Kevin Curtain challenging race leader Fujiwara at every corner and straight, Pitt is in 3rd and Riba 4th. Curtain is trying to go around the outside of Fujiwara everywhere and either he is going to get past soon are they are going to be bashing fairings. Under brakes into Honda Curtain goes through on Fujiwara and I think the Australian may well clear out from here but he is pushing very hard. Curtain made a small mistake on lap 3 which allowed Fujiwara to get a run on him and also Pitt to take him. Onto the main straight for lap 5 and Pitt now leads Fujiwara and Curtain. Whitham had started to challenge Curtain for 3rd but ended up in the grass. Curtain under Fujiwara into Honda and out after Pitt. Vermeulen is in 4th and is closing on the leaders. Kevin Curtain under Pitt for the lead into MG and they banged knees on the way through the tight and heavily cambered corner. Vermeulen has taken advantage of the fairing bashing going on between Curtain and Pitt to close right up onto them and joins the battle for the lead with 15 laps to run. Curtain has now opened a 3 second gap over Vermeulen in 2nd, with a big move from Krusty to get up into 3rd place with Pitt in 4th. Australians are 1-2-3-4 and the top 3 are Honda mounted Australians. Fujiwara back in front of Pitt for 4th and the fastest man on that 10th lap of 21. Curtain, Vermeulen, Fergusson, Fujiwara, Pitt, Riba, Thomas, Casoli, Guareschi, Cruciani and Muggeridge has fought his way up to 11th, but just as I finished that sentence Muggeridge went out of the race. Lap 12 of 21 - Curtain, Fujiwara (2.4 secs), Fergusson, Pitt, Riba, Thomas. Vermeulen slid out of the race, very unfortunate for the 18 year old. Fujiwara also fell shortly after the young Aussie and the Japanese rider looked to be the only serious challenger to Curtain's lead so if everything goes to plan for Kev' from here we will stand on top of the podium. Now with less than 6 laps to run we have Curtain leading with Adam 'Krusty' Fergusson in 2nd and 3.5 seconds down on Curtain with Pitt in 3rd. Lots of lapped traffic now for the leaders, let's hope none of them get tripped up. 3 laps to run and Kevin Curtain is still leading. Le Grelle spins out in to the dirt. Curtain continues to maintain a 3 second lead over Krusty with 2 laps to go. Pitt is a further 8 seconds back in 3rd but has a very safe gap over Riba in 4th so we are set for an Aussie 1-2-3 here today. Should make the very cold and wet Australian fans very happy indeed. Guareschi is on a charge and has taken Riba for 4th but I don't think he will have time to chase down the Kawasaki mounted Pitt. There it is, Aussie 1-2-3.
