World SuperSport 2001 - Round 3 - Race Report

The Japanese wildcards are not a factor in the SuperSport class at Sugo with the championship regulars in the thick of things with Casoli on pole from Foret and Whitham.  Curtain starts from 7th, Pitt 11th and Fergusson 12th.

Lots of fairing bashing on the way into turn 1 but Casoli comes out of turn 1 in the lead.   Casoli, Bontempi, Pirovano, Teuchert, Foret, Whitham, Curtain, Fujiwara, Pitt is the race order as they start lap 2.

Teuchert through on Pirovano for 3rd, a lap later Whitham also took Pirovano and up into 4th.

Casoli, Bontempi, Teuchert, Whitham, Pirovano, Foret, Fujiwara on lap 3.  Casoli and Bontempi have a bit of a gap over the 3rd placed contenders, Teuchert and Whitham.  Lots of men coming down already, must have had at least half a dozen retire already.  Adam Fergusson in the dirt.

Whitham underneath Bontempi for 3rd at the start of the fifth lap.  Pitt is in 8th, Curtain 9th, Muggeridge 11th and Vermeulen 17th.  Whitham and Teuchert are now joining the leading duo of Casoli and Bontempi to make it a 4-way contest.

Teuchert through on Whitham for 3rd but the leading duo of Casoli and Bontempi now has big gap over Teuchert and Whitham who are still battling for 3rd.

Bontempi into the dirt so now Casoli has a good lead to himself.   A lap later Whitham retired with machine problems.  So we have Casoli out in front and Teuchert a few seconds behind in 2nd.  But the battle for 3rd is a lot further back but hugely entertaining as a 7-way battle wages between 7 riders, Foret, Riba, Pitt, Curtain, Kellner, Muggeridge, Pirovano with 10 laps to go.

Pitt makes an unbelievable move under Riba at the end of the main straight to take 4th.

6 laps to run and Casoli still has a good lead over Teuchert who in turn has a massive gap over the hot 7-way battle for 3rd.  Riba takes Pitt on the straight but the Australian manages to slide back underneath him on the brakes.  The Honda definitely has more top end speed than the Kawasaki.

A big move from Pitt to go under the Honda, can he hang on to it?  His biggest threat is the fact that the Hondas have much better straight-line speed.  But Pitt is holding on to it now and making ground in the corners but the Hondas gain some of it back on the straights but the Kawasaki looks relatively safe now in 3rd.

Riba and Foret are battling hard between themselves for 4th which is allowing Pitt to break away a little.  Muggeridge and Curtain are 6th and 7th respectively and both will probably soon be challenging Foret.  An Australian sandwich for into the chicane with Muggeridge on the bottom and Curtain on top but both came out of the chicane in front of the meat in the sandwich which was of course Foret.  That was really quite amazing that one managed to get through on him, let alone two..

Muggeridge is out after Riba now for 4th and he has 2 laps to do try and do it.

Casoli has a 5 second lead over Teuchert who in turn has a huge gap over Pitt in a reasonably safe 3rd.
