World SuperSport 2001 - Round 4 - Monza - Quotes
|
James Whitham - 1st - "Paolo and I have been helping each other, first at Sugo - where I got unlucky, and now here at Monza - and it showed. I just wanted to be in with a chance going into the last corner and when Paolo went past me that could have been that. But he made a little mistake and I capitalised on that. It's a great feeling to win again after so long off the podium - especially to do it here in front of all the Yamaha Belgarda personnel."
Paolo Casoli - 2nd - "At this track the difference between first and tenth is sometimes nothing but I felt I had to try at the last corner to take the win. I already knew that Pere Riba had retired, so I knew it was not just about this race win but the championship. I am happy enough with second and pleased for everyone in the team." Karl Muggeridge 3rd - “I’ve got a really good start, which was practically the big draw card for my race and helped me to get up in the front and I started battling there. Specially this race you can’t stop passing, because if you do you get shuffled back down so you just keep pushing for the lead and hope for the best. The bike was handling really well and performing not so bad, a little bit down on power but it was ok. I’m really happy to be on the podium finally, I guess I’m more relieved than anything. The team has done a very good job this weekend, there is harmony in the box which is good, that helped a lot. We can just improve on that again and we are laughing.” Andrew Pitt 4th - "After qualifying so badly I can't complain with fourth. We got some good points and we're in with a shot at the championship. At the same time I'm a little annoyed because I got myself in a position to be on the podium and I missed out. The last lap was a lottery, with everyone going flat-out 'drafting' and trying to get in the best position. I went for a softer tyre today because I'd qualified so far back and I needed extra grip in the first few laps to work my way forward. I wanted to get up with the front group earlier than I did, but a couple of the guys kept 'drafting' me and that slowed us all up. When I finally did get there I didn't have the traction I needed coming out of the last corner and that's when Karl (Muggeridge) got me. The first six riders were on Dunlops, so I think we had the best tyre for the conditions. Our race set-up with the Kawasaki is pretty good now, but I've got to improve my qualifying. We're going testing next week and we're going to work on qualifying tyres so I can get a better starting Iain MacPherson 5th - “It was like a lottery out there and anyone could have won. I really felt that at least one of us could have been on the podium. I’m sure if we had one more lap we both might have been there. The bike was so good on the brakes and I was able to keep up my corner speed throughout the race, but at this track you just don’t get many passing opportunities.” Jörg Teuchert - 6th - "I had a bad start - typical Jörg Teuchert, but I had a very good first corner. There was lots of elbowing but no-one crashed. There were 33 very good boys there! If only the race had lasted another lap I could have been right with them. My bike was perfect and the very hard front tyre we decided to use made all the difference to me. It got rid of all the chatter I had from the front and it gave me great confidence. I suppose I have good points so that is something." Christian Kellner - DNF - "I think the hard front tyre was too hard for my riding style. I was running with the group catching the leaders and feeling quite confident but the front just washed out at the second Lesmo right hander. There was no warning, no chatter, it just went straight away from me so I had no chance to save it. I was happy with my riding in the race, and it was certainly a lot better than qualifying until I fell." Chris Vermeulen - DNF - “I couldn’t do anything to avoid Fergusson on the opening lap and it meant I couldn’t brake for the corner so I had no choice but to run wide. I got going again but the motor started slowing like it had done in practice. I came into the pits, the team made some changes and I went out to do a couple of laps to see if the problem had gone. It’s been a disappointing Monza debut for me. We’ve been struggling for power all weekend so it’s no surprise that the race didn’t go my way. I’ll be pleased to get to Donington Park for the next round where I know we’ll be more competitive.” |
