World SuperSport 2001 - Round 4 - Monza - Race Report

Another Australian joins the SuperSport grid at Monza, Shannon Johnson has moved from European SuperStock to World SuperSport and sits in last place on the grid.  But we know the boy is fast so I would not think he will finish the race back there.  Curtain has a broken finger and is off the pace, Krusty Fergusson is also struggling.  This sounds like last year's Australian Championship with Curtain, Fergusson and Johnson running against each other.

Guareschi and Riba have proven themselves fastest thus far this weekend but the top 7 are covered by around a second so things should be close.  The chicane on lap 1 will be sure to see carnage develop.

Somehow they all got through turn 1 okay and as they commenced lap 2 it was Riba with the upper hand from Guareschi.  A couple of corners later Guareschi hit the front but Riba took it right back.

Chris Vermeulen into the kitty litter but keeps it upright to rejoin the race at the back.  Guareschi back in front, Whitham on a charge and through on Muggeridge for 3rd, hold that Muggas out-brakes the whole lot of them and shoots into the lead!

Half a lap later Guareschi back in front.  Pitt up into 8th.  Foret through on Muggeridge and Guareschi in one move.  Muggeridge and Guareschi leaning on each other through a 4th gear corner.  Foret keeps the lead but Muggas is right behind him.  Whitham leant on Muggeridge through the back chicane but the situation remains the same.  Hold that, a few corners later Whitham made a move stick but their fight has allowed Foret to gain a tenth or two on them.  Muggas trying to come back at Whitham.

As they commence lap 4 only 3 tenths covers the leading trio - Foret, Whitham, Muggeridge.  Curtain 21st.  Muggas through on Whitham for 2nd once again.   End of the back straight and Muggas nearly out-brakes Foret but thought better of it.

End of the front straight and Whitham goes through on Muggeridge, 3-wide through the 'Grande-Curve', Whitham comes out in front, Foret 2nd, Muggeridge 3rd.  Riba retires.

Foret back into the lead with 10 laps to run but this is still anyone's race.  Fergusson 24th, Johnson 26th.  MacPherson and Pitt battling between themselves for 6th but Pitt holds the upper hand.

Whitham back into the lead, Muggas trying everything to get through on Foret but it looks as though the Suzuki does not have as much power as the Honda in this FIM World SuperSport spec'.

Now it is Foret, Whitham, Muggas back to 3rd.  A lap later Whitham and Muggeridge swapped positions once again at half race distance.

Teuchert has come from 18th on the grid up into 7th and is currently the fastest man on the track.  The end of the back straight and Whitham takes Foret, but Foret comes back on the front straight, the Suzuki loses out again on the straights.

Foret made a mistake, Whitham now in front from his team-mate Casoli who has shot from 4th to 2nd.  But Foret back in the lead again after showing the speed of his Honda to power past the Yamahas with 5 laps to run.

World SuperSport is 'THE' most exciting motorcycle racing by far if ding-dong battles are your thing.

Foret, Whitham, Casoli, Muggeridge.  Guareschi in 5th a few tenths behind Muggas.  Muggeridge trying to get a tow from the Yamahas, got past Casoli, Foret has trouble, puts his hand up, mechanical failure it looks like and he is cruising, he must be gutted.

But up front now is Casoli from Muggeridge, Whitham 3rd, Guareschi 4th.  Kellner into the kitty litter.  Whitham under Muggeridge for 2nd.  The end of the back straight and Muggas takes Whitham back but he gets out-powered down the main straight with 3 laps to run.  Pitt is on a charge and just set the fastest lap of the race.  He has been in a long battle with Teuchert and previously his team-mate MacPherson but Pitt has a few laps left to run to the front.

Pitt challenging Guareschi for 4th now, only a matter of time.  Whitham, Muggeridge, Casoli.  Teuchert through on Pitt with 2 laps to run.

7 bikes are in with a chance - Muggas shoots to the front in a demon braking move into Ascari but now they are on the straight and the Suzuki just gets blown away down the straight.  Whitham back into the lead, Muggas 2nd, Casoli 3rd, Teuchert through on Guareschi for 4th.  Pitt also through on Guareschi.

Muggas made a mistake and has been pushed right back to 5th but less than second covers the top 7.  Pitt has a huge moment trying to get the power down out of a fast turn but holds on.  But Whitham and Casoli have gapped them a little.  Pitt through on Muggas, but Muggeridge gets him back.

Only 8 tenths separated the top 6 as they crossed the finish line.  Amazing stuff and Whitham emerges victorious.

Cristiano Migliorati finished 11th on his debut for the BKM Honda team with his injured team-mate Kevin Curtain 14th. Alpha Technik's Adam Fergusson took 19th.
