World SuperSport 2001 - Round 5 - Donington - Quotes

Casoli - "My plan was always to put some clean track between me and all the other riders, because I knew I could do good lap times, but only if I got clear. It was very hard to concentrate for the first few laps of the race, but after half way I could relax a bit and enjoy it. I took my son onto the podium with me because before the race he said 'You must get me a trophy - a big one!' I always like racing at Donington and the bike and tyre combination was really great today."

Muggeridge - “It was a good result, I’m really happy with second position, I was a little bit annoyed Paolo got away in the first couple of laps and I got hold up, but then it was my fault for having a bad start. I think the bike was handling quite well, it was accelerating pretty well, and the tyres were good. I just didn’t had the speed to take back Casoli, but, that was the only disappointment really. Lap by lap I was just pushing by myself trying to catch him and then I looked behind and the other guys were just sitting there, no one was making a move and I was doing all the work, so that was not on and I thought I get them to help me a little bit but I ended being swallowed up in the pack so I kept going and get back in the front of the group. The team has done an excellent job and worked really hard since the beginning of the year getting bits and pieces together for a good package. We’ve also learnt a lot from the bike again this weekend, so hopefully we can keep that progress going.”

Teuchert - "I had another typical Jörg Teuchert start, maybe eighth or ninth, and it was very hard work to try and pass people. It seemed like everyone was really motivated to keep their positions today. When I got to the front of the group behind Casoli I tried to break away until Muggeridge hit my elbow with his front tyre on the way into the chicane! That dropped me back a bit but I tried hard again and was in a position to attack him on the last corner. I tried to go inside and it didn't work - but now we are quits! No-one could catch Paolo today, but I really tried hard to take second."

Whitham - "I had a go on the last lap but I just couldn't get past Jörg. I was still suffering from a lot of chatter from the front but I realised I had to calm down and not try to ride too hard. So when people came past me it was hard to try and defend against it. I'm disappointed not to be at least on the podium, but considering how I felt after final qualifying the result is pretty good. If I had ridden any harder I would have crashed, for sure."

Vermeulen - “The misfire was there from the first lap of the race and eventually the machine just slowed. The team seem to think it may be a fuel starvation problem but they’re still looking into it. I knew I had a good set up for a strong finish today and the Michelin tyres felt good so I was confident of getting inside the top 10. I’m very disappointed not to have finished. I was in 17th after the first lap and was certain I could score some good points today. It’s hard for everyone in the team this year but we’ll sort the problem out and move on to Germany in two weeks time.”
