World SuperSport 2001 - Round 8 - Brands Hatch - Preview

World Supersport action returns from a five-week break having not raced at the Laguna Seca World Superbike round and Honda's Kevin Curtain will be hoping for victory as he returns from injury after a fall in the previous round at Misano, San Marino.

Curtain is third in the points standings, 19 points adrift of series leader Paolo Casoli with four races, a potential 100 points remaining.

"In Supersport anything can happen so I'll be treating this weekend at Brands Hatch like any other and aim to be on the top step of the podium come Sunday afternoon," says Curtain.

Castrol Honda's Chris Vermeulen took fifth place at the last round at Misano and the young Australian is relishing a return to Brands Hatch after racing there in 2000 while contesting the British Supersport and Superstock championships.

"It's a circuit I really like," reveals Vermeulen. "And one I'm pretty confident of being able to win at. I had a good race at Brands Hatch last year when I joined the Castrol Honda world championship team and we're going there after my best result of the year at Misano so I can't wait to get going."

Shannon Johnson is hopeful of getting his bike on the pace and has been trying to tie up a new tyre deal of late so this weekend we will see if he has managed to get the CBR 600 F4i of his a bit closer to the front of the field.  Adam Fergusson also needs some good results.

Britain's V&M Racing Team will be contesting the Brands Hatch round of the World Supersport championship this weekend, with rider Matt Llewellyn aiming to score his first world championship points in the highly competitive 600cc class.

The Leicester rider, who is currently lying in second place in the British Supersport 600 series, just behind Australian Kirk McCarthy, has been allocated one of the British 'wild card' entries for Sunday's event.

Llewellyn will race his British championship race winning V&M Racing R6 Yamaha, against the best Supersport competitors from around the world, and he is under no illusion as to the task ahead.

"It won't be a walk in the park, that's for sure," said Llewellyn, "but our bike is one of the best in the British Championships, so I'm sure we can be competitive at World level."
