World SuperSport 2001 - Round 8 - Brands Hatch - Quotes

Jörg Teuchert - 1st - "I did not have a plan for that last lap, just try to get past Pitt. I was behind James on the second last lap and lined him up to pass on the long straight, which worked out. Coming into the last corner I was a little too far behind Pitt but he had a small slide and ran a bit wide. Then I realised that I could go up the inside. I managed to pass him but I think that part was just luck. I wasn't sure if I had crossed the line first - but I believed it."

Pitt - 2nd - "It would have been good to have had my first win. I thought I had it and then I saw that wheel (Teuchert) go past me over the line. I did all the hard work leading. I kept doing the same lap times and gradually going a little bit quicker. I could hear the others just behind me most of the time. Every time I looked over my left shoulder the two of them (Teuchert and Whitham) were there so I kept my head down and tried to keep the pace up. I thought I'd done enough, but not quite! As we went over the line I thought he (Teuchert) was a little in front of me. He had a run on me and I couldn't come back again."

James Whitham - 3rd - "I ran really soft tyres as a deliberate policy. That let me get away at the front in the early laps and I knew that I could make some ground. When they caught me I felt confident of staying with them. It was just great to be involved in such a close and exciting race, although of course I'm disappointed to be so close and not win. But on a day like this it was just a pleasure to be part of it all."

Fujiwara - 4th - "I'm a bit disappointed, because I should have had a podium for sure. The race was a big battle but fun, but it would have been more fun if I had been able to push hard in the last five laps. The tyre slid a lot and I couldn't keep touch with the three up front. One of these days, I'm going to win one of these races!"

Riba - 6th - "I had a poor first lap and dropped from being seventh on the grid to about 15th, it was always going to hard work after that."

Paolo Casoli - 7th - "I am very disappointed because I was getting into contention when James Whitham ran wide and dropped back. He came past me on the inside and I had to lift up. That lost me two seconds and two places so I am not very happy. I could not get back to the leaders after that."

Christian Kellner - 10th - "I could not get away with the main group and that had a lot to do with my finishing position. It was incredibly hot out there today, not like English weather at all. Tenth was all I could finish because I could not get past Foret at the end."

Vermeulen - 16th - "I made a good start to the race and was hoping to get 10th place very early in the race, then I started to lose front grip and I couldn't do anything but stay on board. It's been a really depressing day after arriving at Brands Hatch with so much hope of a good result and maybe even a first race win. We continued to learn more about the machine and Michelin tyres but I could have really done with everything coming together this afternoon. At least I've been to Oschersleben before, where we go for the next round. I was also looking for a rostrum finish there last year but was knocked off on the first corner of the race. Hopefully better things will come my way in a few weeks' time."

Muggeridge - DNF - "Not quite sure what happened, I just passed Teuchert on the outside and when I came back on line I suddenly lost the front. I’m really disappointed because I was sitting comfortable in third place and was just going to see what happens for the last few laps. We really could have done with these points for the championship, which seems now nearly impossible. But I guess we have to take it from race to race and now concentrate on the next one."
