Shawn Giles was fastest again today but Liam Magee surprised everyone by chasing Giles for pole.  Magee ended up only a couple of tenths behind the multiple Australian Champion.

"I am having a bit of trouble driving off the turns at the moment but everyone seems to be in the same boat, I know Krusty was also having trouble trying to drive off the turns even with the horsepower he has on the 600."  Commented Giles.  "It would be nice to have a camera on the back of the bike as I reckon there would be some fairly awesome blackies being laid out there today. I feel like I am riding the bike as hard as ever but we have only just managed to match the times I did at the GP, which is a bit strange as we have cams in the bike now.  I think the track surface is quite slippery at the moment for us to be only doing those times.  I am trying hard but we are not going any faster. I think we have about 10 more horsepower up top now with the cams which I think is amplifying the effect that the slippery track is having on us. We will fix it though, I am hoping to do 1m35s tomorrow, the bike has it in it for sure we just have to wait and hope the track offers us the grip to do those sort of times."

Second fastest qualifier Liam Magee explained to us how he ended up on a SuperBike this year after his strong season on the 250 Production bike in 2001.  "At the beginning of this year we really didn't know what we were going to do, we had a few proposals in but they all fell through. Then the GSX-R came up after a guy from Ballarat crashed it down here so we borrowed it from him, put some fairings on it and tried it out at Broadford. At the moment it is pretty much stock standard, we are even running the standard headers and we haven't tried cams or anything yet either. We have just sorted the suspension out and have got it handling really well. We don't really have any sponsors as such at the moment so hopefully us doing well this weekend can change that situation for us."

Alistair Maxwell qualified 3rd while Damian Cudlin rounded out the front row in his comeback to racing.

"The first qualifier went quite well but we tried some gearing changes in the 2nd session which didn't really work."  said Cudlin.  "So I came in and we changed that back.  But we also put a new tyre on and there seemed to be a problem with the tyre as it was chattering away. Maybe we packed something wrong in the van which affected it a little, I don't know.  The front end is really sorted well now though and the bike is hooking up not too bad. We are nearly a second and a half faster than the other R1 runners so that is okay but it would be much better if we were a second faster than the other bikes also."

Josh Brookes is working hard on getting accustomed to the differently set-up Fireblade he is riding this year and commented on the fact that the ex Alex Gobert bike he is riding this year delivers the power much differently to the Geoff Winzer prepared bike he rode last year.  "The old bike had good power and it came on quite hard while this bike seems quite a bit softer in the power delivery.  I don't really know if there is much difference in the amount of power the bike produces but this one definitely delivers it in a much smoother fashion.  We re just chasing a few set-up problems at the moment trying get the bike sorted for how I want it for the race.  It is a new bike to me and it is totally different to what I rode last year so we are working on getting it right for me.  My crash at Honda Corner didn't help, I ran in a little hot but still tried to make it and just slid off. Now we just have to work on the set-up a little more We are lacking a little bit of power compared to the Suzuki's but I hope to be able to make that ground up in other areas when we get the handling right."

Adam Fergusson dominated the SuperSport race while Scott Charlton fought a tooth and nail battle with Shannon Johnson for 2nd.

Charlton had this to say, "I got off the line pretty well, Cam (Cameron Donald) was in the lead and I was in 2nd before Krusty came past us fairly fast in turn two. Cam' then ran wide at Honda which let us through. Krusty sort of disappeared from there while I battled it out with Shannon (Johnson) for 2nd which I ended up keeping from Shannon."

A standout performer for the day was young Reece Bancell who managed a very creditable 4th place finish, well ahead of some very experienced and well proven racers.  The Sydney teenager was justifiably stoked with his result.  "I got a really good start and chopped up a few people in the first turns, I had to make the decision on whether to be real aggressive or not. But if I didn't do that I would have probably got stuck with the bunch behind. I just kept my head down and managed a 4th which is great, I thought I might have ended up with a 2nd for a while there as Scotty (Charlton) and Shannon (Johnson) were really going at it but they stayed upright and I got a 4th which is great."

Cath Thompson took a dominant win in the 125 GP race after next fastest qualifier Peter Galvin suffered bike problems on the start line which left with him no choice but to withdraw from the race start.  "That was good to get a win but all the fast boys weren't out there to be honest as Peter had a problem with his bike."  Cath then went on to explain some of her new found extra speed, "The race kit we got for last year's GP has really given us a boost and the bike is a lot faster this year, we really have a lot more speed from there."  Cath also believes the 125 GP class is in for some serious growth this year.  "We have got a lot of kids coming through now from the 80cc bikes now which is great.  A lot more are coming and already have bikes but have to wait until their 15th birthday before they can start racing."  She also congratulated the organisers on finally seeing sense and not starting the 125 & 250 GP bikes in the same race.

Russell Holland was equally dominant in the 250 GP race.  "I was pretty happy with that but we are still chasing a few handling problems.  But I think we went okay as I haven't spent much time on the bike yet. If we can get the set-up right we might even be able to find another second or more tomorrow."

Jordan Coote led for most of the 250 production race until he was caught and passed late in the race by a charging Glen Kelleher.  Paul Simonson was 3rd and Glenn Allerton 4th.

In the B.E.A.R.S. race Roger Wallis took a close win over fellow Ducati pilot Adrian Pierpoint.
