Paul Campbell led the
field around lap 1 from Peter Galvin and Craig Frederickson.
Campbell held a slim lead in the Championship over Galvin heading in to
this race. But Galvin did not take long to overhaul Campbell for the lead, then his partner, Cath Thompson also went through to relegate Campbell to 3rd. If the race ended in this order it meant that Galvin would win the Championship from Campbell, so the pressure was on! Paul Campbell got 2nd place from Cath Thompson around the back of the circuit on lap 5 of 10. Thompson must have started to suffer some problems as Frederickson then also went past and relegated her to 4th. Campbell then worked his way past Peter Galvin for the lead. Cath Thompson had regained here speed and moved back past Frederickson for 3rd. Galvin pulled alongside Campbell on the main straight before settling in behind for turn 1, Galvin's machine looked to have a top speed advantage over Campbell. Galvin looked to be settling in behind Campbell and waiting to make his move in the final stages of the race. Galvin pulled that move on the penultimate lap and immediately pulled bike lengths on Campbell. Lapped riders came in to the equation on the final lap but Galvin held on to take the race win and with it the 2002 Australian 125 GP Championship. Galvin finished on equal points with Campbell but as Galvin had the more race wins the Championship was declared his.
