Charlton led the field away from Shannon Johnson. Aaron Gobert and
Brendan Clarke both got bad starts and had to make up some places on the
first lap. Shannon Johnson had the lead from Charlton by the end of lap 1 and the newly crowned 2002 Australian SuperSport Champion immediately started pulling ground. By the start of lap 3 Johnson had pulled over a second on Charlton. Rodney Taplin a further 2 seconds behind in 3rd place, Brendan Clarke right on his tail. Coote, Turnbull and Gobert were running 5th, 6th and 7th. Johnson had made the gap a full 2.5 seconds by lap 4. Taplin had caught on to the back of Charlton. Scott Charlton had a huge crash during Saturday's first SuperSport race and is on his spare bike after destroying a machine in that crash. He was also sporting more than few bruises after the high-speed turn 1 get-off on Saturday. Taking nothing away from Taplin though as he has ridden brilliantly all weekend. Reece Bancell got through on Gobert for 7th on lap 5. Gobert again looking to be suffering from grip problems, also after spending a lot of the 2002 AMA season out with injuries he is maybe wisely taking not too many risks. The last thing he will want to do is ring his generous boss at American Yamaha and tell him he has to have more time off through injury. Charlton held off some last lap challenges from a determined Taplin to take 2nd place as Shannon cruised home to take the win by 5 seconds.
