Geronomi got off the
line really well but McMartin had the lead for turn 1, Soderland also
went through on Geronimi, relegating the slightly injured local to
third, Zac Davies in fourth. Soderland tried to hang on to McMartin, while Geronomi and Davies tussled for third. Both Geronomi and Davies have only recently started punting the big twins, both choosing the Aprilia for their mount. Soderland somewhat of an old hand with the Aprilia, and in this race the only one with in a couple of tenths per lap of McMartin. At two-thirds race distance Soderland was still under a second behind McMartin, the Ducati not really getting a chance as much to stretch its long legs around the physical Oran Park circuit. But as they got the last lap board McMartin had extended his lead to 1.5 seconds. Geronomi also pulled out a gap on Davies for the first time in race, Davies looked to be struggling from a lack of rear grip. McMartin took the win by 1.4 seconds over Soderland. Geronomi not that far behind Soderland with third, Davies a little further back in fourth. Geronomi, 3rd - "We crashed on Friday on the 600 but we then decided to concentrate on the 1,000. But this is our first weekend with the big bike and we are trying to set up the suspension as well as go fast in the process so that makes it hard. I am sure we will be on top of it by Eastern Creek and then we will see what we can do." Soderland, 2nd - "Well if we can't win the race then a lap record is the next best thing and we got that. The John Sample boys are doing a great job and a credit to them." McMartin, 1st - "The Ducati Sydney bike is working great as usual, thanks to them. Mike is pushing hard all the way so it is no easy victory here."
