Start from the bottom as uppermost text is last

  • Ukawa does take the win

  • Rossi tries again but runs wide, Ukawa will take the win

  • Has Rossi got enough time to to get him back, probably not

  • Last lap - Still Rossi from Ukawa by the slimmest of margins, Rossi runs wide, Ukawa through for the lead

  • Barros down

  • Rossi through on Ukawa with 2.5 laps left

  • Katoh and Jacque breathing down the next of fourth place Checa, 4 laps to run

  • Gibernau in the pits for a tyre change

  • 8 laps to run - Ukawa leads from Rossi, but they have slowed the pace up by a second a lap, maybe conserving tyres, a planned team strategy in the case of them escaping........

  • Ukawa through on Rossi after Rossi looked behind, maybe swapping positions, Rossi couldn't escape so decided to maybe follow Ukawa for a little while

  • Rossi and Ukawa lapping at half a second under the lap record

  • Rossi and Ukawa have left Capirossi behind now, Loris 2.2 seconds down now

  • Olivier Jacque through on McCoy now also, relegating the Australian to 7th

  • Katoh through on a still not race fit McCoy for 5th

  • Rossi starting to wick it up a little now, maybe trying to make a break from Ukawa

  • Half race distance - Race order - Rossi, Ukawa, Capirossi, Checa, McCoy, Katoh, Jacque, Abe, Barros, Nakano, Biaggi, Goorbergh

  • Capirossi getting quicker and quicker now, 16 laps to go and he just set the fastest lap of the race so far.  Maybe the lighter two-stroke is easier on tyres over the bumpy Welkom circuit........

  • Roberts in the pits again, more work being done to his bike

  • Rossi and Ukawa still running together up front, Capirossi watching the battle unfold from around one second behind in third

  • Laconi having problems also, runs off the track but rejoins okay

  • Sete Gibernau having problems now, and also may be coming in for a tyre change

  • Kenny Roberts in for a tyre change!  Is this a tyre problem with the Dunlops not being able to go the distance?

  • Nobuatsu Aoki crashes out

  • Checa starting to hound Gibernau for 4th position

  • McWilliams retires, gearbox problems

  • Lap 6 - Race order - Rossi, Ukawa, Capirossi, Gibernau, Checa, McCoy ,Roberts, Katoh ,Barros, Jacque

  • Rossi and Ukawa running nose-to-tail up front, Capirossi around a second behind

  • Checa though on McCoy for 5th

  • Rossi responding to Ukawa's challenge and upping the pace a little, Capirossi still 3rd, Gibernau 4th

  • Ukawa starting to threaten Rossi

  • Gibernau past McCoy and up to 4th

  • Rossi and Ukawa have made a bit of a gap now

  • Ukawa through on Capirossi for 2nd

  • They are off the line, Rossi leads them through turn one, Capirossi 2nd, Ukawa 3rd, McCoy 4th

  • Riders gridding up for the start now

NB: Casey Stoner crashed out of 2nd place in the 250 GP race on the third lap
