Rossi got the jump off the line from Ukawa, Biaggi and Checa. Capirossi 5th, Abe 6th.

Nothing then happened until lap 9 of the 28 lap race when Checa came down. Then the drops of rain started appearing, Rossi looked around, Biaggi and Ukawa took advantage of that and shot through on Rossi. It was only the briefest drops of drizzle.

Ukawa got through on Biaggi a lap later to take the lead, Rossi 3rd. Kato and Abe closed down the gap to the leading trio for a couple of laps before Kato dumped it.

Lap 17 of 28 and Ukawa pulled 7-tenths on Biaggi and Rossi. Abe got right on to the back of Ross in 4th but Rossi responded by taking Biaggi for 2nd a lap later but Ukawa now has over a second on Rossi.

Rossi closed Ukawa down in no time and took him for the lead.

On lap 22 Rossi held his hand up while leading the race as some slight drizzle had started to fall again. As over 75% race distance had gone the race result was declared and Rossi wins from Ukawa and Biaggi.

NB: Casey Stoner had a DNF in the 250 race.
