Valentino Rossi led them through turn 1 from Checa
and Biaggi. Over the next few laps Checa and Biaggi swapped places a
couple of times but Rossi was still not getting away from them. Ukawa
joined the leading trio to make it a quartet on lap 4 and moved through
on Checa for 3rd on lap 5. Biaggi went through on Rossi for the lead with 17 laps to run. On the next lap Kenny Roberts went down, Gibernau had already fell a few laps earlier but remounted and continued. Kato also went down shortly afterwards. Two clear battles now, Biaggi and Rossi for the lead, while Ukawa and Checa are fighting over 3rd at half race distance. Shortly after Valentino Rossi went through on Biaggi for the lead and lap after lap built that lead out to over 3 seconds by the final lap. Rossi took the win a few seconds ahead of Biaggi while further back Ukawa got the better of Checa for 3rd. The crowd went absolutely bananas and flooded the
circuit making things very difficult for riders to finish their final
lap.
