Chambon got the best run off the line and led them through turn 1 from Fujiwara, Foret 3rd, Vermeulen also pushing hard in 4th through the first couple of corners.  Vermeulen got through on Foret halfway around lap 1 to take 3rd position.  Teuchert fell early in lap 1, Cogan also went down on lap 1.  Kevin Curtain had got a great start from way down on the grid to be running 6th by lap 2, just ahead of defending world champion Andrew Pitt, Muggeridge in 8th.  Four Aussies in the top ten at this early stage of the race.

Karl Muggeridge showed real aggression, but clean aggression, in the early laps to work his way up to 5th by lap 4 after recording the fastest lap.  Fabien Foret managed to get through on Vermeulen for 3rd.  Kevin Curtain up to 6th.

Fabien Foret went under Fujiwara for 2nd on lap 5, then a few corners later went past Chambon for the lead as though he was standing still.  Christian Kellner had been swapping places with Muggeridge and Curtain every other lap but on lap 7 he was holding the advantage over them in 5th.  He then built on that to take Chris Vermeulen for 4th.

Karl Muggeridge relegated Chris Vermeulen to 6th on lap 7, Kevin Curtain running 7th, Andrew Pitt 8th.  Foret led the way on lap 8 from Chambon and Fujiwara, Kellner 4th.

Paolo Casoli had been slowly creeping forward and was up to 6th by lap 9.  Karl Muggeridge then crashed out of the race in front of him which promoted Casoli to 5th.

The leading five riders, Foret, Chambon, Fujiwara, Kellner, Casoli managed to build a good gap over the next group of riders.  The second group consisted of the Australian trio, Vermeulen, Pitt, Curtain.

Stephane Chambon took the lead from Foret with 15 laps to go, Kellner moved past Fujiwara to take 3rd.  Andrew Pitt moved past Vermeulen for 6th, but nearly 4 seconds behind the leader.  Fujiwara got shuffled to the back of the leading group in 5th place.  Kellner tried repeatedly to put aggressive block moves on Foret and finally managed to make one stick to move past Foret for 2nd.  Paolo Casoli then decided to also do it to Foret and pushed Foret back to 4th.  A couple of laps later Casoli moved past Kellner in to 2nd, a corner later Foret took 3rd back from Kellner.

Andrew Pitt had broken away from the 7th placed Vermeulen and was working hard to try and close the gap to the leading quintet.

Christian Kellner fell out of contention on lap 20 of 28.  A lap later Paolo Casoli took the lead from Stephane Chambon, Fabien Foret also went though a couple of corners later relegating Chambon to 3rd with 6 laps to run.

Fabien Foret slotted under Kellner for the lead with 2 laps to go, then a couple of corners later he lost the front and slid off.  He managed to remount with only losing a few positions.  The battle for the win was then left to Casoli, Chambon and Fujiwara.   Chris Vermeulen also went out of the race in the closing stages with what looked to be a mechanical failure.

Paolo Casoli hung on for the win from Stephane Chambon, Fujiwara 3rd.  Fabien Foret managed to salvage 6th after his crash.  Andrew Pitt scored 4th, Kevin Curtain 5th.

Cruciani finished in 9th place but was excluded from the results when his machine failed to start following the race.
