Local rider and World Championship regular
Katsuaki Fujiwara (Alstare Suzuki) took the provisional, pole only one
thousandth of a second ahead of Fabien Foret (Ten Kate Honda). In third place, Paolo Casoli was close behind the leading duo, while his countryman Piergiorgio Bontempi was an excellent fourth on what is supposed to be an outgunned NCR Ducati 748. Stephane Chambon heads up the provisional second row of the grid, one ahead of James Whitham. Gearing and set up problems for reigning World Champion Andrew Pitt held him down in 14th fastest position, although the top 14 were all timed within 1.022 seconds of pole.
