Karl Muggeridge will start from the front row of the grid in Sunday's fourth round of the World Supersport championship after setting the fourth fastest time in Saturday afternoon's final qualifying session at the Sugo circuit in Japan.

Muggeridge took his first front row start of the year and the Australian believes victory in Sunday's race is possible after recent improvements to his CBR600 machine.

"Making the front row is a great feeling," said Muggeridge. "We've had a slow start to the year while we developed the CBR600 but it's all coming together nicely now."

He continued: "The team has worked hard and it's been tough at times trying to break into the top 10. I made a mistake by changing the suspension this morning and it didn't work out, we changed back to Friday's settings and worked on them and the machine felt better than it has all year."

There was disappointment for Honda UK team replacement rider Tatsuya Yamaguchi after the 26-year-old Japanese rider crashed and broke his left wrist and scaphoid in this afternoon's final qualifying session.

Yamaguchi - replacing the pneumonia-hit John McGuinness - was ninth fastest in Friday's opening qualifying session and that time was good enough to put him in 11th place on the grid.

"I'm very disappointed," said Yamaguchi. "I was really looking forward to the race and I feel like I've let the team down. The crash happened when I out-braked Iain MacPherson at the end of the back straight, I couldn't stop and I collided with him."
