Honda's Karl Muggeridge took sixth place in today's fourth round of the World Supersport championship here at Sugo in Japan.

The gritty Australian rider, starting from fourth place on the front row of the grid, made a disappointing start to the 25-lap race but fought through to hold third place by the ninth lap. Muggeridge also set a new lap record for the 2.32-mile circuit on lap three.

Muggeridge then suffered handling problems and could do little more than hold on for his best finish of the season, losing out on fifth place to a photo finish with German Christian Kellner.

"Everything was fine until about the 16th lap, the tyre started to wear as normal but it changed the feeling from the machine," explained Muggeridge. "After that I was probably losing about 0.1s a corner and it was enough to cost me three places.

"All it really tells us is that we need to do some testing when we get back to Europe and find a solid base setting that will be a starting point at every track. Overall I'm not that disappointed, I qualified on the front row and I've had my first top six finish of the year."

  • Casoli nearly 3 seconds behind Muggeridge but may have enough speed to catch Muggeridge for 4th before the end of the race

  • Foret just walked past Muggeridge on the straight, Foret's Ten Kate Honda is so much faster than Karl's Honda in the straight line speed stakes
