In the Supersport World Championship Frenchman Fabien Foret howled his
Honda around the historic Monza circuit in a best time of 1’53”867,
almost as fast as the best qualifying lap ever, set by Vitto Guareschi
in 2001. His performance was noteworthy because of the patches of damp
tarmac dotted around the track, which were an unwelcome legacy of the
atrocious pre-qualifying weather on Wednesday. Muggeridge, who had struggled with power and reliability from his Honda UK machine in the early races, went second fastest, holding off local favourite Paolo Casoli (Yamaha Belgarda). Katsuaki Fujiwara (Suzuki Alstare), like a long list of his comrades in Supersport arms, had enjoyed the provisional pole position slot earlier in the day, but could not make it stick and had to settle for fourth and last position on the overnight front row. Andrew Pitt, languishing in 18th position at one stage, found the key late on, with the lap record holder scoring fifth overall on his factory Kawasaki. Chris Vermeulen, the rider of the fastest bike through the speed trap (273kmph from his Van Zon Honda) swept to sixth fastest place, making it three Aussies in the top six positions.
