Chris Vermeulen’s career reached new heights after the 19-year-old
Australian rider secured his first ever pole position. His time of
1:53.127 was a new qualifying record, and was one of many fast laps set
during the final section of the damp then drying 45-minute final
qualifying session. Completely free from lingering traces of moisture at the very end, the track was occasionally chaotic in the last few minutes of qualifying. Fabien Foret (Ten Kate Honda), displaced from his overnight provisional pole position by the attacking might of Katsuaki Fujiwara (Alstare Suzuki) worked his way back to second on the grid, ahead of the Japanese rider and his French team-mate, Stephane Chambon. World Champion Andrew Pitt, second in the title race this year, was only 11th fastest after being balked by slower riders every time he went for a quick lap time.
