In the Supersport World Championship final qualifying session the last
section was washed out after a violent cloudburst soaked the entire
circuit a few minutes after the 45-minute session began. Thus the
qualifying positions for the majority of riders were based on the Friday
times, not the best laps from the final session. Fabien Foret (Ten Kate Honda) therefore took his second pole position of the 2002 season, and will be joined on the front row for the 19-lap race by Chris Vermeulen (Van Zon Honda), Karl Muggeridge (Honda UK) and Katsuaki Fujiwara (Alstare Suzuki). World Champion Andrew Pitt, Kawasaki was a lowly 16th, while Stephane Chambon (Alstare Suzuki), the World Championship leader, was 9th. Local man James Ellison was 15th, James Whitham 17th and teenager Stuart Easton 21st.
