Colin Edwards got off the line well and led them through turn 1 for the first time, Hodgson 2nd while Bayliss stormed through from the 2nd row to shoot straight in to 3rd, Bostrom 4th, Xaus 5th, Haga 6th. Antonello fell after the Shell Chicane on lap 1. Chili squeezed past Haga for 6th towards the end of lap 1. Edwards immediately started to build a lead over Hodgson and recorded a 1m27.1 lap time on the 2nd lap to make his gap over Hodgson out to 8-tenths of a second. Bayliss holding down 3rd, a couple of bike lengths behind Neil Hodgson. Lap 4 saw Bayliss start to try and challenge Hodgson for 2nd but the British rider had his measure. Edwards continued to stretch a small lead after setting a 1m27.0 on his fourth time across the line. Bayliss was looking to be able to stick right on Hodgson's tail quite easily but did not have a speed advantage to enable him to make a safe pass. Edwards recorded a 1m27.0 once again on lap 5. By lap 7 Edwards had pulled a full 2 seconds over his pursuers. Bayliss trying everything he can, with in sensible parameters, to try and get through on Hodgson but just could not pull it off. Bayliss saved a near high-side on lap 8 in his efforts to try and get an advantage on Hodgson. Broc Parkes running in 10th at this stage, Goddard 13th. James Toseland was starting to pressure Noriyuki Haga for 7th around lap 10 and managed to pass Haga on lap 12. Hodgson actually managed to escape a little from the sliding Bayliss and was not allowing Edwards to stretch his 2 second gap out any further. The leaders started to encounter some lapped traffic at half race distance but managed to negotiate their way through without too many problems. Ruben Xaus had got through on Bostrom early in the race for 4th and had managed to build a good gap over the American by the halfway stage of the race. Troy Bayliss was still holding station behind Neil Hodgson but Colin Edwards was maintaining a 2.5 second lead out in front. Edwards on Michelins, Hodgson is on Dunlops, Bayliss on Michelins. Bayliss got through on Hodgson with about a third of the race distance to go and immediately set out after Edwards but his Ducati looked to be really struggling for rear end grip. Ruben Xaus had been catching Bayliss and Hodgson but then dumped it on the run to the start/finish straight with 5 laps to run. Bayliss then got stuck behind a gaggle of lapped riders which killed any ground he had been able to make on Edwards, but it must be said that he was not in a position to threaten anyway unless Edwards was to make a mistake. But Troy's never-say-die attitude showed through once again but his Ducati was really suffering from grip problems by this stage, as I guess were most of the other riders but Bayliss just seems to show it up more than the others due to his rather animated style. Colin Edwards took the win, his fourth in succession. Bayliss a hard fought 2nd, Hodgson 3rd.
