Team Alstare Suzuki Corona Extra rider Gregorio Lavilla completed an unhappy day by only managing to qualify on the fourth row of the grid. His time of 1:44.133 was virtually the same as his best time in regular qualifying, but would 've been better but for a couple of nasty wobbles on his Superpole flying lap. Nevertheless the Spaniard now faces an uphill task if he is to leave South Africa with a top ten finish. The problems that have plagued the team all season were just as evident today and it seemed that, no matter what the team tried, significant improvement was almost impossible.

Superpole today was won by American Colin Edwards (Honda), who posted a lap of 1:41.321. Troy Bayliss (Ducati) was second, with Ben Bostrom (Ducati) third and Noriyuki Haga (Aprilia) fourth. All of the top ten today were within the official lap record of 1:42.928.

GREGORIO LAVILLA - 14th, 1:44.133 - "On my Superpole lap, the first split was quite good. The second felt OK, but a couple of wobbles lost me a lot of time and from then on things didn 't get much better. It was quite scary at times and I nearly crashed, so I decided that I just had to complete the lap. The funny thing is - and it 's hard to understand - the bike doesn't feel so bad on race rubber. But when you put on a qualifying tyre, it becomes a very different animal. It 's hard for us to understand why this happens and so it 's hard to try and find the solution.  Today we tried to make the bike more stable and we managed to progress a little - but not as much as I wanted. Here, in the high altitude of Kyalami, my bike feels slow and it also feels like we are losing out more then the twins. Tomorrow, my aim is to make a good start, lap consistently fast and see what happens.
