Castrol Honda's Colin Edwards was happy with his opening day's
performance as he recorded the second fastest time in the opening
qualifying session for Sunday's fourth round of the World Superbike
championship here at Sugo in Japan. Edwards, hoping to improve on a Sugo record which shows one podium finish at the 2.32-mile circuit a third place in 2000, was at the head of the leader board for most of the one-hour session before being toppled by fellow SP-2 rider Makoto Tamada. "We always knew Tamada would be hot here after winning both races last year," said Edwards, "I'm doing my own thing and trying to find a good race set-up for Sunday. "HRC have made one or two changes to the machine and that should help me at least get off the line better than I have been doing this year. We're in good shape with the tyres, Michelin have worked hard in the 12 months since we were last here." Edwards, who took pole position at Sugo in 2000, added: "We'll continue improving the machine and see if there's a better lap time in there somewhere."
