Australia's Troy Bayliss has continued his brilliant start to the 2002 Superbike World Championship by taking out a stunning double race victory at the famous Monza Circuit in Italy, host of round five of the championship.

Bayliss' remarkable start to the season has seen him take victory in eight of the ten races held so far this season. Today's wins were complimented with a sensational new lap record as he blasted his Infostrada Ducati 998F-02 around the 5.793km circuit in a time of 1-min 47.434-secs, a staggering 1.479 seconds under the previous best mark.

Today's double victory gives the defending World Superbike champion a total of 224 points, 38 clear of archrival Colin Edwards (Castrol Honda) who finished with a third and a second from the two 18-lap races.

The opening race saw Bayliss involved in a race long battle with Edwards and Neil Hodgson (HM Plant Ducati), which was highlighted by a couple of major incidents. On lap ten Bayliss lost concentration momentarily and was forced to take too the slip road as he overshot his approach to the first chicane while in the race lead. This mishap saw him loose considerable ground, but it was in his pursuit of the leaders that he was able to break the existing lap record twice in a three lap blitz that saw him not only catch them, but then move into the race lead. He maintained his composure on the final lap and left no opportunity for anyone to pass as he took the flag 0.259 seconds clear of Hodgson, with Edwards close behind in third.

"I would have to say that that was one of my best ever races," said an elated Bayliss afterwards. "Having made the mistake I just put my head down and tried as hard as I could to catch up. I put together a number of great laps in the middle of the race and then to come away with the race win was excellent. The mistake was all my fault. I was thinking about the various possibilities of the race and missed my braking marker. I could have turned it into the chicane, but it was easier to just go down the slip road a rejoin on the other side. I didn't get an advantage, if anything I lost too much ground when I came back on to the track."

Race two was shaping up as a copy of the first, but Bayliss was able to hold onto the race lead before being able to ease away from Edwards and Hodgson in the middle of the race as they became involved in a battle with Noriyuki Haga (Playstation2 Aprilia). As he did in race one he kept working on increasing the gap and again set the fastest lap of the race, this time on lap 13 with a 1:48.570. He took his eighth win of the year by 2.226 seconds from Edwards who was shadowed across the line by Haga and Hodgson.

"The track conditions were such that the lap times were a bit slower, but all I did was put my head down and work on building a gap," Bayliss said. "Once I saw that I had a half second break on them, I just kept going hard to make sure that I broke the tow. I tried to break away from them earlier in the race but couldn't so I actually took a break for a moment and slipped in behind them just to see how they were going, before I got back to the front."

"This place is just so special. It is the single most important race for Ducati, so it was good to get a double win for them and all of their fans that are here. I love coming here and I love winning races here. It is very special."

Bayliss now has a career total of 16 race wins from 58 WSBK race starts and has scored podium finishes on 32 occasions.

The Superbike World Championship heads for the first time to the full Silverstone circuit in England, which will play host to round six of the championship on May 25 & 26.
