Castrol Honda's Colin Edwards took his third
pole position of the 2002 season today to lead
the grid for Sundayıs two, 28-lap races of round nine
of the World Superbike championship here at Laguna Seca, USA. Edwards set his fastest lap of the weekend, 1.3s inside the lap record for the 2.24-mile circuit, as he recorded the 13th pole position of his career, and all after a Saturday morning practice crash. "I knew the lap time was in there," said American Edwards. "I put it together but, better than that, we know that Michelin have a good one-lap Superpole tyre and a good race tyre for Laguna. I want to follow today with two wins tomorrow." He continued: "The crash this morning was stupid. There was oil on the track at turn five and I couldn't do a thing about it. I was taking the corner as normal but as I braked I knew it wasn't right." Edwards was later fined 3000 Swiss francs by officials after he grabbed the red flag and stopped the morning's qualifying session so the oil could be cleared from the circuit. He commented: "I'm very disappointed with the fine but I was thinking about the safety of all the other riders and I've seen too many bad crashes because oil on the circuit hasn't been spotted."
