A hot lap of Winton Raceway with Craig Coxhell

"I cross the start/finish line hard on the gas and hold it as long as I dare before knocking the R1 down a gear and hugging the inside ripple strip through turn one, trailing the throttle a little mid-corner. "When I can see the exit it is hard on the gas which spins the rear up a little, the wheelspin tends to send you a little wide so I hang off the bike even more to try and keep it going in the direction I want. "Then to 'turn two', trail the front brake a little in the middle of the corner, concentrating on missing the inside of the ripple strip as I clip the apex and get hard on the throttle again. The R1 gets a bit out of shape at this point so I pretty much just have to close my eyes and hang on while changing up through the box as the bike revs out, then down a gear for the long left-hand sweeper. "This is a fairly basic corner but the right hander on the exit is where it gets a little tricky, here I have to keep a steady throttle as the bike runs to the outside of the track which is what I want as it lines me up for turn 5. Hard on the brakes and knocking the bike down 3 gears for '5'. "This is a slow corner but I try and carry as much speed as possible through the turn as the bike is really on its side now and things get really messy if I am the slightest bit eager with the throttle on the way out. The trick on the exit is to stand the bike up as soon as I can and give it a quick squirt on the throttle before shutting it off for turn 6, which is very tight. Do the same thing on the exit as I did on 5 before getting to turn 7. This is also very tight but it is crucial that you line yourself up for a good run out onto the short straight, up through the gearbox, then hard on the brakes and down 3 gears for turn 8. "So much weight is transferred to the front here because of the braking force that the back comes around as you turn in, this helps you square off the corner and get hard on the gas again. Out of this one the R1 wheelspins and wheelies quite savagely, but I pretty much just let it do it's thing while changing up through the gearbox again before getting hard on the brakes for the final turn. "This is a 180-degree corner which is very tricky as you clip the ripple strip on the way in before running out to the middle of the bend, precise throttle control is important here, then aim for the inside of the last part of the turn for a clean run onto the main straight and up the gearbox all the way into top while glancing towards pit-lane to check my pit-board at over 200kph before heading into the 'esses'. "Here the track surface has a slight bump in the braking area which kicks the back up and nearly throws me over the bars, down three gears, into the 'esses' holding the bike as tight as possible to line myself up for the exit where it is hard on the throttle again which slides the bike across the start/finish line around 84 seconds after I started." |
