23 year old Scott Charlton has made the move up to the premier Superbike
category to take on the big factory backed boys in the 2003 Shell Advance Australian Superbike Championship.
The Melbourne local started out, like so many before him, in the Australian 250
Production Championship. A category that nearly all of Australia’s successful international road racers have competed in during the early stages of their career.
1997 was his debut year, and he
showed immediate promise by making ‘A’ grade in the same year after finishing up as the top ‘B’ grader in the Victorian State Championships.
The next year things did not go quite as planned after
a big crash. But Scott bounced back in 1999 and rejoined the top ranks to take second in the Victorian Championship. He also finished third overall in the Australian 250 Production Championship, behind
Broc Parkes and Craig Coxhell that year. Very good company indeed.
Scott moved to the growing 600cc Supersport category in 2000 and immediately found form by adding yet another Victorian State
Championship to his burgeoning swag.
Another highlight of 2000 was Scott’s guest ride on the PTR prepared F.I.M. specification GSX-R750 Superbike. Scott took to the factory race machine like a
duck to water, scoring fourth and fifth place finishes from his two starts on the machine. He remained in the Supersport ranks for 2001 with much success.
In 2002 Scott Charlton fought titanic
battles with Shannon Johnson throughout the Australian Championship season. Charlton ended the season in second place behind Johnson after what was a great season for the young Victorian.
In a
challenging move for 2003 Scott Charlton has joined forces with Brent George to head up the new Brown Gouge Nova Honda Team.
Riding CBR954 Fireblades Scott and Brent have already enjoyed much
success this year with finishes in front of the factory backed Honda squad. They also head up the privateers points table in the Shell Advance Australian Superbike Championship.
With the backing
of Brown Gouge, Nova Honda and Shell Advance, Scott looks to be in for one of his most successful seasons yet. |
