Perfect weather set the scene for a thrilling fifth round of the Yamaha sponsored Australian Supermoto Championship at Tamworth last weekend.

Mark Avard (Husaberg) and Stuart Bennett (KTM) once again proved a step above the rest in the big-bore S1 category to take two wins apiece at Tamworth. Avard took the overall round win though as Bennett scored a second and third while Avard got two seconds which gave him a two point buffer over the enduro specialist.

Avard now leads the S1 Championship by 37 points which is a healthy but not insurmountable lead with four races remaining when the travelling road-show rolls in to Hobart for the decider on November 23. Under consideration is a plan to award double points at the final to entice more riders to enter and giving competitors a chance to work their way up the points ladder in Hobart. A final decision on this proposal is expected soon.

Adding another ingredient to the mix at Tamworth was young Alex Gobert (Honda) who returned from competing in American Supersport competition to try his hand at Supermoto. Gobert was on the smallest capacity machine on the field but didn’t let that hold him back as he challenged Graham Cheney (KTM) for third overall on the day but it was Cheney got the nod for the final podium spot.

Mark Willis took his third clean sweep of the year by taking all four wins at Tamworth. The 27 year old had also taken a perfect score at the earlier Bairnsdale and Coffs Harbour rounds but some dramas at Stanthorpe cost him the championship lead. Willis has been on a mission to make up for that poor performance with perfect scores in all rounds since that event but Adam Altham’s (Yamaha) incredible run of consistency sees the Melbourne rider retain the overall S2 Championship lead by a single point over Willis.

The battle for the S2 Championship looks set to be a no holds barred affair when the show visits Hobart. However it must be said that Willis seems to have a clear speed advantage over Altham, the Brisbane rider has scored 14 wins to Altham’s two. But anything can happen at that final round, especially with the exciting prospect of more world class riders entering the fray as they return from overseas competition in road racing or motocross. This will be one of the most eagerly awaited events of the year with the championships to be decided in Tasmania on November 23.
