Australian SX Nationals 2004
- Round Four - Melbourne (Olympic Park) -

| Team Motorex KTM were confident
heading in to the fourth round of the Supercross Nationals at
Olympic Park, but nobody was quite prepared for the complete and
total domination they displayed in front of an 8,000 strong
Melbourne crowd. In the Pro Open final Motorex KTM pilots Jay Marmont and Cheyne Boyd went straight to the lead. But only a couple of corners into the race a mid-air collision nearly spelt disaster for both riders as they touched prior to negotiating a tight underpass section. Jay came out the other side okay, while Boyd was left to pick his machine up off the deck in order to rejoin the race. The plucky Victorian was not to be deterred though as he quickly worked his way back through the field and up to second place. The domination from there on in was complete. Jay leading the way out in front, Boyd running strong in second, the perfect quinella for the Motorex KTM squad. With the win Jay now leads the premier Pro Open class by 12 points over Honda’s Troy Dorron, while Cheyne Boyd has moved up to third place with 51 points after his impressive second place in Melbourne. Jay Marmont takes us through his successful night. "I felt the quickest rider out there all night, practice, racing, everything. I won my heat pretty easy but I messed up a little in Superpole, I didn't power all the way past the timing beam, but still I only missed out on that by a couple of hundredths of a second. "I got the start I wanted in the final but Cheyne and I came together while in the air. I had to put my foot down to save it when I landed. That hurt the toe I injured at round one in Sydney, and that gave me a fair bit of pain throughout the race. "I made a lot of mistakes out there in the first half of the race which allowed Cheyne to nearly catch me, he got pretty close on about lap twelve I think. But I realised that I just had to clear my head, get it right, and then put my head down to pull out a gap again, which I managed to do. "So I think that shut up some critics as a few people had been asking why I backed off last weekend in Brisbane, allowing Cheyne to close the gap. This week I went out aiming to be the quickest in the final laps, and I managed to do just that. So I come out of this one with another win, I am pretty stoked to say the least." Boyd had a costly DNF at the Townsville round of the Supercross Nationals but his stellar results since that night has propelled him up the ladder to third place in the points tally, twelve down on second placed Troy Dorron. Cheyne Boyd gives us his view on how the night unfolded, “I felt good in practice but didn't put the best times down, I just couldn't get a clear lap in through the traffic. “I was feeling good by the second heat but I made a mistake going for the lead, it cost me as I got pushed back to fourth. I ended up finishing third in that heat which put me in not the best frame of mind for the final. “When it came to the final though I just put my head down at the start, it was all going good early on in the first lap, but then I came together with Jay and I went down. I got up pretty quick so I didn't lose a lot of time, but it did cost me a few positions. “I just put a big effort in and rode strong, three corners later I was back up to third and behind Doz (Troy Dorron). I knew I was faster than him so I piled on the pressure and ended up passing him through the whoops section. I felt really strong through there tonight. “I then concentrated on being smooth and not making any mistakes. I did just that and am really quite happy with how I rode that middle part of the race. "I did make a couple of small errors when I got right behind Jay which did cost me. I finally got there, but couldn't take the next step. With two laps to go I knew I wasn't going to get Jay unless something happened to him, I didn't give up and still charged, but I also had to make sure that I didn't throw away a solid second place. "Overall though I am pretty happy tonight, I am still getting stronger and I learnt a lot, definitely another good stepping stone in the right direction." So a clear 1-2 for Team Motorex KTM in the Pro Open final is a huge result for the European manufacturer, one that clearly cements its place at the forefront of Australian motorcycle racing. But then to put icing on the cake Ryan Marmont dominated the Pro Lites final in style to turn the quinella in to a perfect trifecta! Adding interest to the remarkable feet even further is the fact that Ryan and Jay are siblings. Jay the older of the two at 20 years, Ryan slightly younger at a sprightly 18 years. A fantastic weekend for the Wollongong based family. Making the feat even more impressive is that Ryan and his nimble KTM 125SX are up against a horde of the new 250cc four-strokes that the Japanese manufacturers have brought in to play in the Pro Lites class. Ryan Marmont, "I felt comfortable in practice and put down some pretty good lap times. Heading into the first heat race I wanted to put in a good show. I rode that one fairly neck and neck with Hoady (Mitchell Hoad), I knew I had the speed and the fitness, I just had to put it all together in the main and we were on for a win. "I wanted the holeshot so bad in the main, we had done a few modifications to the bike and had it handling perfectly so I was confident that if I could get a good start I would be a strong chance for the win. "Got the perfect jump from the gate and from there just ran my own race. I knew I had to split from the start as there is a lot of fast guys out there, I didn't want any of them to be able to come close to me. "I felt really strong and didn't put a foot wrong, again my fitness allowed me to keep it all together and tonight that was good enough for the win.” Motorex KTM Team Manager Rob Twyerould was obviously elated at the perfect result delivered by his young charges. 1-2 in the Pro Open, and a clear win in the Pro Lites was about as perfect as it can get. Rob Twyerould gives his take on this fourth round of the Australian Supercross Nationals, “Ryan was unbelievable tonight. He holeshotted from the gate and from there didn't make a mistake. He has gapped Reardon (Daniel Reardon) in the points standings now and he (Reardon) was the main challenger for the title. “Tonight Ryan proved what we all believed in him, we knew he had the pace and it was just that he had to put it all together for the perfect result. Tonight he did exactly that. "In the Pro Open it was great for Jay to also holeshot, but it was a bit scary when both Jay and Cheyne went into the tunnel. We thought for a second they both had come down, as it turned out only Boydy had went down, but incredibly he jumped straight back up in a flash and got stuck straight back in to the action. "He then kept Jay honest the whole way, at some points he looked stronger than Jay, particularly through the middle of the race. The difference is that Jay has just got that little bit of fitness on Cheyne at the moment, and in those final laps that becomes all important. But Cheyne has come back from his injuries remarkably well, few thought he would be at this point already, but we knew he had what it takes. “Jay never ceases to amaze me with his dedication and desire to get where he wants to go in this sport, which of course is a strong factory ride overseas. I honestly think he has a great chance of making it to the very pinnacle of international competition. "The scary thing for our opposition is that from here on in the Motorex KTM boys are going to build on this, and they are going to get stronger as each week goes by." After a hectic opening four rounds over four weeks, the Supercross Nationals now takes a well deserved break next weekend before resuming battle at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on February 21. |
