| The CDR/Boost Mobile/Yamaha team
displayed an amazing turn around in form dominating round eight of
the Australian Supercross Nationals at Newcastle’s Energy Australia
Stadium last night. Daniel
McCoy, Cameron Taylor and Troy Carroll all won their semi finals
then backed up their results with solid podium finishes in their
respective finals.
Troy Carroll showed he was back to his best, taking the Superpole by
four tenths of a second ahead of Cheyne Boyd, team-mate Cameron
Taylor and series leader Jay Marmont.
After a run of bad luck Daniel McCoy absolutely excelled at the
Newcastle event winning his semi final race convincingly before
enduring an extraordinary battle with American import Greg Schnell
in the Pro Lites final.
McCoy led for most of the fifteen lap race swapping the lead with
Schnell twice before the American finally pulled ahead with only two
laps to go.
Nineteen year old McCoy said he really enjoyed the battle with
Schnell and was happy to finish a very close second, to a rider who
is ranked in the top ten of the US 125cc Supercross Series.
“After my fall in the heat race I was a little bit anxious going
into the semi but I knew I had the pace and once I settled into a
rhythm there was no stopping me,” McCoy said.
“I have been working on my starts all week and it really paid off
tonight. I got great starts in all three races and even claimed
holeshot in the final.
“The final was amazing, the battle between Greg (Schnell) and I was
intense - I have never fought out a whole race with someone like
that before.
“My championship is still very much alive, I have moved back into
third place and I am only fifteen points of series leader Ryan
Marmont,” Mc Coy continued.
Cameron Taylor put on his performance of the year claiming holeshot
in his semi final and going on to take the chequered flag over half
a lap ahead of the rest of the field in the six-lap semi .
Taylor finished the main event final with a podium finish after
series leader Jay Marmont was disqualified by officials for
continually jumping across a corner barrier and clearly cutting the
track.
“I had a great time out their last night,” said Taylor. “My starts
were good, my confidence was up and I settled into a nice rhythm
really easily.
“I couldn’t believe I led the semi final by over half a lap - it
gave me a really good boost going into the Superpole and final.
“I got a bit unsettled going into the first corner of the final but
quickly got it together and managed to keep up with the first four
riders.
“Boydy and I were battling for fourth place while Troy and Jay had
their own battle going on for second.
“It was a battle between KTM and Yamaha for the whole race as Hammy
was way out in front and none of us were gong to catch him.
“I managed to get past Boydy on the last lap when he made a mistake
in the first rhythm section of the track and that put me up to
fourth.
“Jay was disqualified before the podium presentation and that gave
me third place,” Taylor added.
Comeback kid Troy Carroll proved he will be a major force in the pro
open class with a convincing win in his semi final that put him
through to the Superpole one lap shootout.
Carroll was the last rider to run in the Superpole and he surprised
everyone by clocking a time more than three tenths of a second
faster than the rest of the challengers.
“It felt great,” Carroll said. “I was really comfortable on the bike
tonight and everything felt right.
“It was fantastic to come out and take Superpole in my first
attempt.
“The final was pretty tough Hammy and I broke away from the rest of
the field then Hammy pulled away from us and I battled with Jay
Marmont for quite a few laps before he took me on the corner they
disqualified him for cutting.
“It was a fantastic night for the whole CDR/Boost Mobile/Yamaha
team, I am especially pleased we could deliver (team owner) Craig
Dack some good results.
“I am really looking forward to the next round in Brisbane, I missed
the first Brisbane event due to my back injury so I can’t wait to
get out there in front of a home crowd,” Carroll said.
CDR/Boost Mobile/Yamaha team owner Craig Dack was ecstatic with the
performances of his three riders and said the team had certainly
turned the corner.
“The last two months have been the most trying in my time as team
owner,” Dack said. “We are back from the brink and I am really proud
of how our three riders turned things around tonight.
“The whole team has put in hours of work and stayed extremely
positive throughout our bad run and it has finally paid off.
“As much as it is a great result for the riders it is also fantastic
for the team,” Dack concluded. |
