MCNEWS.COM.AU - The ultimate in motorcycle news

The third round of the highly popular Staintune Thumpercross Series took place last Sunday at the Geelong Motorsports Complex at Avalon, Victoria and it was a day of non-stop action packed racing.

The fast and open circuit started the day hard packed with several grassy sections thrown in for good measure to keep the riders on their toes, however shortly after lunch some light showers turned the clay surface into ice, leaving the riders working hard to stay upright. With a good field of Quads in attendance, a quick decision was made to send them out to clean up the circuit with their wide tires making short work of the slippery surface. With the rain passing and the quads spinning away the top surface, the track turned into a tacky dry surface resulting in the best racing seen all year!

Staintune Pro Open
The premier Staintune Pro Open class saw a return to action by old foes Cameron Taylor (CDR Boost Mobile Yamaha) and hometown hero Troy Dorron (No Fear Honda) as they once again battled each other. Joining the dynamic duo in a battle for top spot was Mornington Kawasaki’s Adam Millar who was riding his 250F in both the Pro Lite and Open classes.

After trading places several times in the first of their two 20 minutes plus one-lap races, it was Taylor who took the win with Dorron hot on his heals across the finish line. The second moto was a nail biter with Taylor, Dorron and Millar racing nose to tail for the full race. At one stage, all three riders over cooked it into a corner and each rider ran off the track one after each other, so close were they together.

Honda Pro Lite
The Honda Pro Lites has fast become the class to watch with strong manufacture support and huge field numbers at every round. Joining the usual suspects of Cameron Taylor, Troy Dorron and Glen McDonald (Yamaha Australia) on track was Factory Kawasaki rider Brent Landman as well as an assortment of other up and coming young guns.

The first moto was an exciting race with the open circuit evening up the playing field for all riders. Taylor lead early with Millar and McDonald close behind but try as he might, Taylor simply couldn’t pull away. McDonald showed his experience as he calculatedly put a pass on Millar and then again on Taylor to take the win. McDonald was especially exciting to watch as he put his flat track experience to work as he repeatedly slid sideways into and through several of the fast corners in a manner that would leave many Moto GP riders applauding!

The second of the Honda Pro Lite races was a barnburner with part time Mini 4’s and FMX rider, Cameron Sinclair (Powerhouse Motorcycles) taking the lead after two corners and leading for several laps. Hot on Sinclair’s heals however was the charging group of Taylor, McDonald, Dorron and Millar who rode as if there was no tomorrow! Taylor took over the lead with McDonald close behind and like their first moto, McDonald pushed his way past Taylor to lead the way yet again. This time Taylor wasn’t going to give an inch and the two riders were so close together there we often side by side through the corners. With time running out on the last lap, Taylor made a desperate lunge for the lead only to let Dorron sneak through for 2nd place where they all finished in the end.

Freestyle
During racing the freestyle crew of Matt McFerrin and Cameron Sinclair put their high flying skills on display while at the same time, commercial airplanes were flying over head as they took off from the nearby Avalon Airport. It must have made for interesting viewing for the airliners passengers! Matt McFerran was looking good on his Full Throttle Sports Honda CRF450 which he will be riding for the rest of the year in the upcoming FMX Unleashed series.
