Garry McCoy made a successful
debut in Valencia. With practice and qualifying taking
place in cold but sunny weather, while race day brought dark
clouds and brief rain showers. Garry elected to use slicks as the race had not been declared wet and his understanding of the FIM rules suggested that if any significant rain fell the race would be stopped. While it didn't pour down with rain enough moisture fell to make things particularly difficult for Garry on slicks and the riders who had elected to run intermediate or 'wet' tyres gained a significant advantage over the Australian early in the race. But later in the race the track had started to dry which enabled McCoy to pick up speed and record the fastest lap of the race on the final lap on his way to record a seventh place finish. McCoy got off to a much better start in the second race as he got away with Haga, Haslam and Toseland but only a couple of laps in to the race Garry lost a lot of rear grip and started to slide backwards down the field to an eventual sixth place. "I'm a bit disappointed about the first race," said McCoy. "I decided to start with a slick because I was sure that the race would be stopped if the rain came, the the Race Direction were obviously not of the same opinion. The track did dry out towards the end though and I could then make a bit of a push. "I started quite well in the second race but I kept having to close the throttle as the back was really spinning up, we are not yet sure whether it was a tyre problem or a problem with our set up of the bike. We will have to try and work that out from the data. "I am sure the gap to the others will close as we get more kilometres under our belt, but sixth place overall is a good debut." |
