Report - Kawasaki

The English circuit of Donington brought some good results for the Kawasaki PSG-1 Corse team, whose riders finished in the points.

The main achievement was to have scored the front row start with Regis Laconi. Perhaps the French rider was expecting something more than a sixth and a seventh place but he made a mistake with the rear tyre choice in the first race and he had some difficulties with the last corners of the track in the second race. He has shown that he is coming out of a period of bad results.

Fonsi Nieto found the competitive edge he seemed to have lost during qualification. In race 1 he achieved a sixth place result but in race 2 he crashed while he was running in the points.

REGIS LACONI: “Unfortunately I mistook the choice of the rear tyre in race 1. The tyre I chose was too soft and after a few laps it was already finished, at that point the only thing I could do was to finish the race. It was my mistake because I should choose the tyre that the others had. In race 2 I started quite well but I tried to pay attention during the first few laps because I didn’t know how my tyre would react which was harder than the one I had this morning. Then I started to push but I could only reach the sixth place. I almost stopped in the last two slow bends, maybe my riding style didn’t permit me to conserve my tyres. I’m anyway quite satisfied, especially after the disaster in Australia”.

FONSI NIETO: “I choose a hard tyre and I had some difficulties at the beginning of the race to reach the right temperature, but that was the strategy: try to push more at the second part of the race. It has been a chasing round, trying to reach the others but is hasn’t been so bad considering how the qualification has gone. It had been bad race 2 where I crashed going straight into a bend. Unfortunately I had some problems from the beginning; we made some changes to the engine break that made the bike extremely difficult to be ride. It’s a pity because I’m sure I could have done a good race”.
