Superbike Race Two

Troy Bayliss looked eager to make it a double with a clear holeshot off the line pitching him into turn one ahead of race one combatant Troy Corser while Max Biaggi did his best to stay on terms with the Australian duo.

Corser took the lead a couple of laps into the race as a group of five began to break away from the pack. Corser, Bayliss, Xaus, Fabrizio and Neukirchner the leading lights with 3.5 seconds separating them and Ryuichi Kiyonari in sixth place after only four laps.

Bayliss reasserted his place at the front of the pack as the race progressed and Neukirchner declared his challenge by moving past Fabrizio and Xaus to take third place close astern of Corser. Kiyonari steadily worked his way into contention and by half race distance had swelled the leading group to six.

Carlos Checa’s strong tilt at the 2008 title took another dent with a technical problem forcing his retirement from the race. A very costly problem for the Ten Kate squad as the Czech disaster has effectively cost their man his chance at the #1 plate. Ducati also not safe from mechanical gremlins however with Xaus’ 1098R also expiring.

No such problems for the Xerox machine underneath Bayliss however as that combination went from strength to strength as the race wore on. The pace proved too much for the opposition and with three laps to run both Corser and Biaggi had been left in his wake and left to fight over the minor placings on the podium. And it was some fight.

Michel Fabrizio saved his best for last however and joined in on that battle for second place with a new lap record with only two laps to run putting him right in contention for a podium result.

Fabrizio took third place from Corser early on the final lap and then piled the pressure on Biaggi. Fabrizio made second place his shortly afterwards to make it a Xerox Ducati 1-2 and Biaggi made it an all Ducati podium. Corser a strong fourth place.
