Australian Superbike 2008 - Round Two - Mallala (SA) - Honda Report

The Teknic Honda team achieved the manufacturer’s first international round win for the all-new CBR1000RR upon its debut after star rider Glenn Allerton piloted the bike to a perfect points score at Mallala’s round two of the Australian Superbike Championships on Sunday.

Allerton had little trouble amassing full points at the South Australian circuit after securing pole position with a record qualifying time of 1:05.773.

He followed that up with a flawless performance including three holeshots, (race one was red flagged and restarted) followed by two wins.

The round victory bolsters him to the top of the series ladder, in front of stalwart Shawn Giles, before all Teams head to Winton's round three at the end of May.

The weekend was the first official outing for Honda's new production sportsbike that now features a highly effective aerodynamic design, new "underslung" exhaust system and slipper clutch.

With only a limited time to set up the 2008 CBR1000RR, the 27-year-old New South Welshman said his results on the weekend are a taste of more to come.

"What can I say? Pole position and two wins shows how great this new bike is, and it couldn't have gone any better for us. This weekend is everything I hoped for."

Whilst Allerton displayed complete comfort on his ride, team mate Jason O'Halloran struggled to find the same level of ease.

The young rider, however, was still able to finish a respectable fourth overall, and said he felt stronger as the weekend progressed.

"I got a bit of a bad start in the first race and finished fifth so we went back and tried a few changes.”

“That helped me to get a better result in race two because I was able to keep up a consistent pace.”

"I'm confident we'll find the best set up for me by the time we hit the next round."

Team Manager Paul Free said it was one of the most rewarding weekend’s for the Team on record.

“The new bike and Glenn hit it off straight away and he put on an awesome display. His starts were all picture perfect and he showed great personal strength.”

We did struggle to find a good set up for Jason, and it wasn’t until the last race that we were able to find something that allowed him to dig in and move forward.”

The Dunlop tyres worked fantastically for both riders, and seemed to wear better than their fellow competitors,” Free said.

The Team is now planning for a testing session at Winton before round three 30 May to 1 June.

Representing Teknic Honda in the Supersport class aboard his Pirelli shod CBR600RR, Wayne Maxwell worked hard on the weekend to gain valuable championship points at Mallala’s round two of the Australian Championships.

The Melbourne based rider took away two 4th place finishes, and now sits fifth overall saying he gave it “everything he had” on the day.

From his front row qualifying position, Maxwell rode strongly to finish ahead of fellow Honda rider Judd Greedy in both stoushes.

“I pushed hard but was unable to gain much ground once everyone settled into their race pace,” the factory rider said.

“Still it was a great battle for position, and I believe a race win is not far away. I am really enjoying riding the CBR600RR and am getting stronger all the time on it.”

Brodie Waters, who is contesting the Moriwaki MD250H in the 125GP class of the Australian Superbike series, joined the Honda factory team once again this weekend at Mallala showing how capable he is of piloting the manufacturer’s latest 4-stroke race machine.

Fifteen-year-old Waters has moved forward in leaps and bounds since his last appearance at an ASC round at Eastern Creek.

The teenager finished fifth overall on Sunday after three races, and showed amazing fortitude according to Motologic’s Paul Free (Team Manager).

“Brodie rode fantastic particularly considering he finished 14th at Eastern Creek,” he said.

“His starts were strong and his pace is increasing at every event. It was really something to see.”

“As development on the bike progress and he learns more about the Moriwaki, he will only get stronger.”

Brodie agrees. “It’s an awesome bike and I know we’ll get there. Other than a couple of minor mistakes, I felt like I rode pretty well.”

Brodie’s next event will be at the MRRDA series at Broadford on 10-11 May.
