Australian Superbike 2008 - Round Four / Five - Queensland Raceway - Superbike Race One

NB: This report and results should be treated as PROVISIONAL

Glenn Allerton was the early leader in the opening Superbike bout with a 1m14.27 second scorcher on the opening lap of the 16 lap encounter to eke out a half second buffer over Jamie Stauffer and Shawn Giles.

Dan Stauffer had also started strongly and on lap two worked his way past pole man Giles for third and immediately started closing on younger brother Jamie. Robert Bugden was in fifth place within striking distance of Giles while Kevin Curtain, Jason O'Halloran and Craig Coxhell were also keen to make their presence felt.

Both Yamaha men put in 1m09.4 second laps to start closing in on Allerton. Coxhell put a move on O'Halloran for seventh place and was all over the back of Curtain but with Bugden two seconds ahead in fifth it looked likely that sixth place was the best Coxhell could hope for unless he could really pull something out of the bag.

By lap six the top eight runners in the race had all managed to dip into the 1m09s. Dan Stauffer was the man on the charge though and squeezed past his brother for second place on lap seven before immediately putting the pressure on race leader Allerton. Bugden got the better of Giles for fourth place after the Suzuki legend made a small mistake.

Dan Stauffer hit the front on lap eight and less than a second covered the top five at the halfway point of the race.

Coxhell had started to close the gap on fifth placed Giles as the race progressed. The younger Suzuki pilot had the gap down to half a second with five laps to go and looked likely to get the better of his more senior teammate.

Jamie hit the front of the pack with four laps to run but nothing separated Jamie, Dan, Glenn and Robbie. It was game on. That was until the red flag came out on the next lap due to an accident at turn three between Bugden and Giles.

Bugden had highsided out of turn three and Giles was left with nowhere to go and was involved in the melee. Both riders were taken to the medical centre but it was Giles who came off worse. The three-time Aussie Superbike Champ suffering concussion along with at least a broken ankle and shoulder with further scans possibly to reveal even more injuries. Clearly Gilesy is going to be battered and bruised for some time.

Officials declared the race run and the result called at the 13 lap mark. Under race rules the cause of the red flag is removed from the result thus Robert Bugden and Shawn Giles lost their fourth and fifth places which promoted Coxhell and Curtain into those positions. The winner Jamie Stauffer ahead of sibling Dan with Glenn Allerton rounding out the podium.
