-- AMA Monster Energy Supercross 2013 - Round 5 - Anaheim III - Smarty's
Report -- Images - Gallery A - -- A3 450 Class Report: Just when most people were looking at the Dungey/KTM combination with some doubt we see a flawless main event ride for Dungey. The day didn’t start well with a crash in practice followed by a shock failure in the heat before being involved in a ten bike pile up in the LCQ and JUST sneaking through to have the final pick of the gate in the main. On the far right of the gate and with Ryan Villopoto on the far left, Dungey got a decent drive out of the gate in the main then basically flat tracked the KTM450 around the outside of the first left hand turn to come out inside the top five then with an inside run on the next right hander took advantage of the Chad Reed/Justin Brayton crash to come out just behind holeshot king Mike Alessi. Dungey soon blew by Alessi to take an early lead and an eventual win that now has the 2011 champ sitting second in the championship, 14 points back from Davi Milsaps. Milsaps’ night was business as usual, solid practice and qualifying followed by a heat win before banging bars with the best riders in the world to take a solid second place and extending his championship lead. There is more to it than that though, Milsaps ALMOST took the lead from Dungey early in the race then fell victim to a hard charging James Stewart before getting his mojo back to pass Stewart for second place and more importantly his fourth podium in the five rounds. I am going to use the only quote worth printing this week and it from Milsaps. “I’m just taking it one race at a time. I go back every week and I work and I work and I work. This was the first weekend that we ran different suspension so it was a little bit different and we have some work to do on it. But it’s definitely in the right direction and I feel like I can move forward with it. Being one of the big five, big six, big seven, big eight… we’re all fast. We’re all getting it for the win, and we all can win at any given moment. Big five is overrated, there’s more than five guys out there that can win, period. Being up on here, being on the podium, being top five, top ten, whatever, I think that every single one of them are the best in the world for sure.” After two disastrous weekends where he failed to finish both main events Justin Barcia sat in fourth for most of the race watching Stewart and Milsaps circulate before passing Bubba for third with just a few laps remaining. I found it interesting to hear during the week that Bubba needed to score at least four top ten finishes to get his cheque from Red Bull and with his fourth at A3 he has that money in the bag so it will be interesting to see what happens from here, the lone Suzuki pilot rode smart for a change to finish fourth. Poor Chad, for the second week in a row he has been involved in a crash in the second corner and once again the hard charging Aussie blasted his way to fifth place, one place ahead of privateer Honda pilot Andrew Short who continues to impress on the production CRF. Trey Canard coulda, shoulda been on the podium but three crashes in the main put pay to that but the number 41 Honda finished one place ahead of Ryan Villopoto who struggled on the slick track with small slip ups all race. Footnote: There is a character in the U.S by the name of Ronnie Mac. He is a red-neck that rides a 1998 CR250 and goon rides like no other. There is a lot of conjecture as to who the rider really is but to find the solution just watch the finish line jump that Jimmy Albertson did when he won the LCQ ahead of Ryan Dungey. Daniel McCoy still hasn’t managed to get one good start since he arrived in America so the 13th in the heat and 5th in the LCQ are the result of starting too far back to get into a qualifying position. DMC has one weekend to go to try and get into the main program before heading back to Australia. A3 - 450SX Results Heat 1 (Top 9 to Main): 1. D. Millsaps. 2. J. Barcia. 3. C. Reed. 4. A. Short. 5. Roczen rode the slippery layout extremely well and now has a 20 point lead with four rounds remaining so a good result next weekend at San Diego before the break will mean a lot to both Roczen and Tomac. The other championship contender going into A3 was Cole Seely but the TLD Honda rider finished a distant 12th in the main and has lost a bucket load of points to the top two so San Diego will have to be a win for Seely to stay in the championship. Josh Cachia is looking more and more comfortable with a solid fourth in his heat with Kade Mosig managing eighth in the same heat and despite being inside the top ten for most of the main event Cachia dropped back to 14th by the end, just two spots in front of Mosig. Cachia now sits a credible 18th in the championship while Mosig holds down 23rd. This is on Cachia’s facebook. ”well a3 finally give me a break with a 4th in the heat race and a 13th in the main after being in the top ten for most of the race slowing getting better. just give me that top ten finish and ill be happy. thanks for all the support aussie troops.” A3 - 250SX Results Heat 1 (Top 9 to Main): 1. Freestyle freak Brian Deegan’s son Haiden was also out on the track and he scored a solid fourth place. Remember, a little kid by the name of Ryan Dungey once rode in the KTM Junior Challenge as did Mike Alessi. KTM Junior Supercross Challenge: 1. Slade Varola. 2. Tyler Blankenship. 3. Ty Freehill. 4.
