For model year 2002
Harley-Davidson’s Softail motorcycles represent the essence of custom
motorcycling. The authentic styling doesn’t age, but the technology
underneath has kept up with the times.
An innovative rear suspension allows for the uncluttered appearance of classic hardtail styling, but with a refined, smooth ride. A balanced Twin Cam 88B engine permits a tightly packaged, rigid mounted engine to rumble with minimal vibration. And the Softail family offers cutting edge custom styling that is faithful to Harley-Davidson’s heritage. For 2002, all Softail models with fuel injection receive a new feature to an already technologically leading EFI system. A new three-part temperature control strategy keeps riders cooler by sensing the rear cylinder head surface temperature and lowering it, if needed, via controlled fuel delivery and idle speed (see EFI release). Joining this rider comfort feature is a new fuel shut-off valve with a more tactile feel between the off and on setting and enhanced styling. Additionally, new bullet turn signals, first introduced in 2000 on the FXSTD, come standard on all Softails with the exception of the Heritage Springer, which retains the vintage style signals in keeping with its look. The FXSTD Softail Deuce has garnered the most media awards of any Harley-Davidson motorcycle ever, including: (Cycle World’s Best Cruiser; Hot Bike’s Top Six; Motorcyclist’s Best Cruiser and Rider Magazine’s Best Cruiser). In its third year of production, the unique design features of the Deuce have made it a customer favourite. The Deuce returns in 2002 with its stretched fuel tank, chromed front forks and shotgun exhaust. Offering classic early dresser styling, the Heritage Softail Classic delivers a smooth ride, comfortable riding position, low seat height and available improved EFI. For 2002, the rear brake pedal has been moved forward to give riders greater comfort. This improvement has also been made to the FLSTF Fat Boy and FLSTS Heritage Springer. For 2002, the FLSTS Heritage Springer receives many improvements including Dunlop Harley-Davidson-branded wide whitewall tyres. The Heritage Springer is offered for 2002 in Vivid Black, Harley-Davidson’s best selling colour, and is outfitted with a redesigned rear brake pedal. Customers have found the FXST Softail Standard to be the perfect canvas to paint their own personalized bike. The FXSTB Night Train retains the same traits that have made it a “bad boy” bike of choice. Featuring a blacked out engine and trim, no other Harley-Davidson model puts the rider in the aggressive “clamshell” riding position quite like the Night Train. The FXSTS Springer Softail plays a very important role in the Softail family, as it represents a clear heritage and lineage to prior Harley-Davidson models, while capitalising on a unique style within the motorcycle world.
