Honda's new 433cc TRX
Quad is now on sale at $11,390 for the manual version and $11,690 for the
convenient electric shift model. These new models also feature TraxLok - Honda's first switch-operated 2WD/4WD system - and a torque-sensitive, limited-slip front differential. TraxLok enables the rider to shift between 2WD and 4WD with the simple push of a switch located on the right handlebar. An electromagnetic mechanical clutch unit (EMCU) located on the centre of the propeller shaft engages 4WD with a quiet two-way roller clutch. Unlike mechanical designs, TraxLok ensures smooth operation by employing a magnetic switching mechanism that engages when front and rear wheel speeds vary by less than 10kph. The FE model features ESP (Electric Shift Program) for push-button up-shifting and downshifting through the five-speed gearbox. The rider shifts simply by pressing either the up-shift or downshift button mounted on the left handlebar. An onboard electronic control module (ECM) monitors information from four sensors - engine rpm, countershaft speed, shift drum angle, and shift spindle angle - to control the speed of the electric shift motor's gear and clutch engagement. A neutral lockout is also fitted to allow engine braking to be used when negotiating steep descents. ESP is not battery-dependent, operating whenever the engine is running. Should the rider ever need to shift manually, the TRX450FE is also equipped with an auxiliary shift arm in the tool kit. An OHV air-cooled 433cc engine is longitudinally mounted on cushioned engine mounts which serve to reduce vibration. A snorkel-type air intake system is specially designed for water crossings while a closed crankcase vent system safeguards against engine oil contamination. Starting the beast is no problem due to electric start. The independent double-wishbone front suspension uses Showa shock absorbers to give 150 mm of travel while out back a steel swingarm is suspended by dual Showa rear shock absorbers which also provide 150 mm of travel. Ground clearance is a generous 195mm. Large cargo racks front and rear allow payloads of 30 and 60kg respectively and further enhance the desirability for the man on the land Honda's new Quads can two 385kg. Another pertinent point for the farms is a reasonably large 12 litre fuel tank. A waterproof accessory socket provides 12-volt, 10-amp power with a built-in fuse. Specifications
