Honda’s offering
in the kids quad market is the attractively styled TRX 90.
A reliable 86cc single cylinder engine provides motivation. A maintenance free electronic ignition system should provide reliable and consistent performance. Fuel is delivered to the four-stroke engine from a large six-litre fuel tank via a 15mm carburettor. A maintenance free electronic ignition system should provide reliable and consistent performance. An ignition key is also provided with the TRX which means the kids can’t just sneak around the back and fire up the bike whenever the mood takes them. Starting the TRX requires the ignition key to be inserted, neutral engaged in the clutchless four-speed gearbox, followed by a quick tug on the pull-start cord and away you go. Honda has decided to go by way of a pull-cord start rather than electric start as a safety precaution. Honda’s reasoning is that it is easy for the smallest of children to get hold of a key and press an electric start button but the pull-start system ensures that very small children will not be able to start the machine due to the physical strength required. Independent front suspension with a pair of shock absorbers combine with a single-shock rear suspension system ensures any terrain can be traversed. Drum brakes are fitted front and rear. As on most machines in this market an easy to adjust throttle limiter can be set to restrict the amount of throttle available to the child, this can be decided by the parent taking the child’s level of experience in to account. It can be restricted right down to a slow walking pace if required. However, exciting enough performance is available when full throttle is made available. All up the machine weighs in at 110kg and has 102mm of available ground clearance. The TRX offers a low 648mm seat height and a transferable six-month warranty. Honda dealers are currently offering a lay-by scheme and the TRX sells for $4,490. Honda has a wide range of quad machines ranging from the TRX 90 featured here through to adult quads like the TRX 250 and fully featured agricultural quads like the TRX 500 Foreman. SPECIFICATIONS |
