When considering a junior quad a responsible parent should also figure some protective gear in to the budget. The bare minimum is, of course, an approved helmet. The cheapest items are open face types that start from $80. A helmet with chin protection is preferable; they start from around $120 with better quality items available from $160.

Goggles are a necessity when in the bush, these prevent from errant branches etc. being able to injure the eye. Goggles sell for as low as $20.

Sturdy footwear is a necessity but motocross style boots are perhaps more preferable. These will set you back just over $200.  These are the most expensive items on the shopping list and sturdy footwear can suffice if the budget does not stretch this far.

Nylon pants and jerseys are remarkably resistant to ripping and tearing. Jeans rip as soon as they hit the deck while Nylons will slide and hang together. Nylons can be purchased in sets for as low as $130. Elbow and knee protection is also an option.

In regards to price, these machines range from Suzuki's LT50 at only $2,499 up to Yamaha's YFM80W for $4549.
