Overview
With
the development of the stunning new Ninja ZX-6R and ZX-6RR, Kawasaki makes
a dramatic departure from the broad-spectrum
appeal of the earlier machines, giving both
bikes a much stronger track bias. As the aggressive styling of the new
Sixes implies, their engines, chassis, riding
positions and overall performance are oriented towards serious
sports riding, track days and full-on racing.
The ZX-6R carries over the 636cc
displacement (but not much else) of last year’s 6R,
while the ZX-6RR is a limited production race-oriented machine
equipped with special engine and chassis
features for 600cc class racing.
Both bikes run new, lightweight aluminium
frames with a central Ram Air duct, revised
steering geometry and new sub-frames. Some of the many other advanced
features include an inverted front fork,
radial-mounted front brake calipers, lighter wheels and the trickest
instrument package this side of a GP circuit.
The new fuel-injected engines pump out
more power, have a higher rev ceiling, weigh less
and are more compact. The cylinder head, valve train, cylinder,
transmission, crankcases and many more
components are completely new. Engine weight has been significantly
reduced and performance markedly increased.
In addition to
the above modifications, the ZX-6RR engine features a more over-square
bore/stroke ratio for increased high-rpm performance, forged racing
pistons and a back-torque limiter for the
clutch. The chassis gets an adjustable swingarm pivot. An optional
race kit offers a wider range of tuning parts, including a
programmable ECU and tuning parts for the
clutch.
Key Points
- All-new engines are more powerful,
lighter and more compact
- Electronic fuel injection boosts power
across the rpm range
- Valve train completely redesigned for
high-rpm operation
- New close-ratio transmission
- Lightweight aluminium frame with
central Ram Air duct
- Fully adjustable inverted front fork
- Radial-mounted, 4-piston front brake
calipers
- Racing-type instruments include shift
indicator & lap timer
- Aggressive new styling package
includes LED tail light
- Kawasaki are hoping
to have these machines available by December or January
ZX-6RR Special Features
- Compared with the
earlier 600cc ZX-6R, the new ZX-6RR uses a more over-square bore/stroke
ratio for improved performance at high rpm (66 x 43.8 -> 67 x 42.5 mm).
- 3-ring, forged
pistons are fitted. Lightweight construction results in a weight
reduction of approximately 5 grams
- Crankshaft
re-balanced to suit changes in stroke and piston weight.
- Back-torque limiter
fitted to the clutch helps prevent rear wheel hop during corner entry.
- A programmable ECU
comes with the race kit, as do different springs and shims for the
slipper clutch.
- Adjustable swingarm
pivot allows the chassis to be tuned to suit track conditions.
- A steering damper
mounting boss is fitted to the frame.
