A new engine is fed by a similar suction-piston fuel injection system to that on the latest R1. Yamaha say that 90% of the engine internals are of a new design and they now claim 123hp @ 13,000rpm. Helping keep that show cool is a new radiator which is claimed to offer 30% improved cooling capacity. A new Deltabox III frame cradles the engine and is completely made of cast aluminium, a first for a production motorcycle. The wheelbase runs to 1,380mm, same as the previous model even though the new machines swingarm is 10mm longer. Fork angle remains the same as the current model. However, the lightened 43mm fork tubes reside in new triple clamps which run a reduced offset. Striking new 5-spoke wheels combine with exciting R1 style bodywork and attractive new lighting arrangements to give the R6 a completely fresh new look. The changes add up to a near 4kg weight reduction, Yamaha now claim a 162kg dry weight for their supersport contender. Expect the new R6 to debut early in 2003.
